Markel Wholesale Announces Three Executive Promotions

Markel is pleased to announce the promotions of three of its executive team members.

Jeff Lamb will join the Product Line Leader team as Executive Underwriting Officer to oversee wholesale underwriting. In his new role, Jeff will work with co-Executive Underwriting Officers, Robin Russo and Nathan Warde to ensure Markel Underwriters are fully equipped regarding risk appetite, appropriate authority, and new products.

"Jeff's experience in working in the regions will be invaluable and will help us successfully execute our underwriting plans," said Gerry Albanese, Markel's Chief Underwriting Officer.

In 2008, Jeff helped develop and open the Markel Mid South office in Dallas, TX which was the prototype office for the One Markel regional structure. He has served as the Managing Director, Production and Underwriting for that office since its inception. Prior to working in Dallas, Jeff worked for the former Markel Underwriting Managers office in Red Bank, NJ (now Markel Northeast). Jeff will relocate to Markel's headquarters in Richmond, VA in August.

Wendy Houser will return to the Markel Mid South regional office as the Managing Director, Production and Underwriting where she will lead the underwriting and marketing efforts within the region. Wendy previously worked with the Mid South office as Director of Marketing and worked alongside Greg Rubel and Jeff Lamb to open the Mid South office. In September 2010, Wendy relocated to the Richmond office to head the Wholesale Marketing Department, where she was subsequently promoted to Managing Director, Wholesale Marketing.

"I feel a strong sense of loss making this announcement, however our Mid South team and our producers in the Mid South region are gaining back a terrific asset," said John Latham, President, Markel Wholesale.

Evans Nash has been named Managing Director of the Wholesale Marketing Department. Evans has been with Markel for 17 years and has over 26 years of broad underwriting experience in all lines of business. For the past three years, Evans has worked within Markel's Product Line Leadership group as Managing Director of Binding P&C, as well as assumed responsibility for auto physical damage, truck broker liability, and binding inland marine products.

"We believe Evans' work in the Product Line Leader organization have made him an integral part of the team already. He is well-known among our agents and our associates and he brings a wealth of broad experience to the team," said John Latham.

In his role in Wholesale Marketing, Evans will oversee the wholesale Corporate Account Executive program and all wholesale-related marketing, advertising, and communication efforts.  He will be an integral part of our wholesale senior management team and will coordinate activities with corporate marketing to ensure we are consistent with advertising standards and other activities elsewhere in the company.

Congratulations to Jeff, Wendy, and Evans on their recent achievements!

Got Wheels?

In case you didn't know, Markel has a division that specializes in monoline physical damage coverage for autos of any type. The first thing that comes to mind is probably long-haul trucking, but we can do so much more than that.

Some examples of our specialty classes include:

  • Construction Fleets
  • Parade Vehicles
  • Non-Emergency Transport
  • Sightseeing Buses
  • High Value Personal Auto
  • Bank Owned Vehicles
  • Service Vehicles
  • Classic Cars/Antiques
  • Mobile Command Units
  • Public Livery (Taxi, Limo, Shuttle)
  • Promotional Vehicles
  • Municipalities

Coverage is non-admitted and is available in every state. Our target is small to mid-sized risks with a primary focus on the non-trucking classes. We have a variety of coverage and deductible options, with a minimum premium of only $750.

Louisiana Patients Compensation Fund

Effective August 1, 2012, Louisiana will implement House Bill 766. House Bill 766 amends the current Patient's Compensation Fund regulations to reduce the time frame in which, you, our surplus lines broker, must remit the PCF provider surcharge.  The amount of time is decreasing from 45 days to 30 days. The 30 day span runs from the time the PCF-eligible healthcare provider pays his or her premium.

A 12% penalty may be imposed on parties who fail to timely remit payment and legal action may be taken to collect the surcharge including any applicable penalties, legal interest and attorneys' fees.

Mid South Gets Their Whirl On!

This past Wednesday, the Mid South office hosted an all staff outing at LaserWhirld in Plano.  The entire staff was split into 7 teams - each team went head to head in the first ever Mid South WhirlyBall Tournament.

What in the world is WhirlyBall?
A combination of lacrosse and bumper cars, players ride in bumper cars and carry a scoop, with which he or she can pass the ball to teammates and shoot at the goal.

The competition was fierce, but Team Yellow Jackets were the ultimate victors, squashing the opposition with a 9 to 5 win!  Congratulations to Gregg Cornille, Jim Hemphill, Kathy Cook, Temeka Bryant and Crystal Hall for snagging the 1st place win in the Mid South WhirlyBall Tournament!

Big Changes to MarkelOnline.com
Have you visited our website lately?  You may have noticed some of these changes...
  • Small limit inland marine business for contractors equipment, miscellaneous property floater and motor  truck cargo can now be rated, quoted and bound online through QuickQuote.  This includes both monoline and package business.  We have also revamped these EZ Raters to make them easier to follow.  Policy issuance will now be your responsibility for inland marine business written within your authority - monoline and package.  Detailed policy issuance instructions have been added to assist with this effort.
  • Additionally, over 120 more P&C class codes have been added to the QuickQuote function for rating, quoting and binding online!  The addition of these classes now totals almost 80% of our product offering available for quoting online.  Recently added classes include:
    • Mercantile
    • Artisan Contractors
    • Warehouses
    • Monoline Liquor
  • Our liability 'Additional Coverage' screen within QuickQuote has been redesigned for more ease of use.
  • Quote letters produced in QuickQuote will now show producer's name and address.
  • You will notice that the screens in QuickQuote now reflect our new branding.  The colors are different and the overall look is cleaner, but all information is in the same location as before.  The rest of the website will exhibit the same new branding scheme in the near future.

There are also some underwriting changes in addition to website changes:

  • We have removed the option for A&B sublimits on all restaurants/bars with over 75% liquor receipts and all nightclubs (GL and/or liquor coverage).  A&B sublimits will continue to be offered on restaurants/bars under 75% liquor receipts, as well as, apartments, condos, hotels, clubs, convenience stores and grocery stores.
  • Where available, A&B Sublimit charges will now be as follows:
    • $25,000/$50,000 A&B Sublimit for additional 5% of GL premium
    • $50,000/$100,000 A&B Sublimit for additional 10% of GL premium
