Bainbridge Island at work... together!                                                            October 10, 2012

 Greetings!

The weather is about to change. I am so very grateful for the brilliant days we've had, and I've gotten myself outside to enjoy the season almost every day. But the natural light we get in the office, and the views of the trees changing color is amazing, whether I get out or not. Just saying.

What grownups want from coworking

Typical of the coworking spaces popping up around the world are the "urban, hipster facilities with a down-market, countercultural vibe," says a blog post from Serendipity Labs. That's a great fit for the young creative class workers who are the first audience for this new niche industry. At the same time though, swarms of corporate middle and senior managers are finding themselves working from home as their employers downsize and reinvent traditional offices. "Yet, over 80% of corporate workers still say they would rather not work from home due to isolation, distractions from work and interference with home life." Are these folks good candidates for coworking? What environment are they looking for?

Soooooo, it turns out that both the young creative types and the older manager types want the same things in a coworking space, but interestingly, not with the same priority. In fact, the list mostly gets reversed! Number 1 on one of the lists is "Spacious, clean design, natural light." Any guesses as to which audience this belongs to?

For even more info on the state of coworking worldwide, download this illustrated report from Deskmag. And here are some excerpts from my talk at the April Chamber of Commerce meeting that also pointed to trends in worker independence.

Who We Are

New guest workstation offers Windows 8 and Adobe CS

Our list of shared resources is growing! In addition to the paper shredder and a lending library of business books, we now have a dedicated guest computer. And it has Windows 8 and the full Adobe Creative Suite loaded on it! That means you now have access to Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Or you can test out Windows 8 before making the leap to upgrade your own computer.

Feel free to try it out; it's on the desk between Leslie and the standing workstations. If you are planning to use it for an hour or more, please let us know. You can also reserve it in advance by calling or emailing us. Enjoy!

Writers group meets Thursday, Oct 11, 3-5pm

Calling all writers... the monthly SPELL group meets tomorrow, 3-5pm. Bring your ideas, projects you are working on, and don't neglect to tell us if your book was just nominated for a National Book Award. We usually do a fun writing exercise. This group is growing!  Open to drop-ins.
