Bainbridge Island at work... together! September 19, 2012

Greetings!
As we near the celebration of our first anniversary, there is another milestone we are monitoring: soon we will have 100 current members (we have about ten to go).Who will sign on as "Xpat #100?" With the Passport membership going up in October to $25/month, we expect a small flurry of new members wanting to grab and hang on to the introductory price of $15/month. So we might make it by the big party! By the way, I saw some of you at the BASE lecture at the library featuring BGI co-founder Jill Bamburg relating stories from her book on "Getting to Scale." Jill will say a few words on local living economy at our first anniversary party too!
Can you donate a raffle prize for the anniversary party?
We want the party to be free and available to all, AND we want to offer a fun way for those who can contribute to do so! With a raffle, everyone wins. Attendees can choose to buy $2 raffle tickets for many chances to be a winner. And we encourage you to donate a prize! We will display donors' promotional materials at the raffle station. So far, we have Bainbridge Cinemas movie ticket packages, two novels from Dave Kragen's Killware Chronicles, and a stunning photo by a photojournalist purchased and donated by Laurel Wilson. Carol Tice is donating a blog review ($50 value) to help convert visitors into subscribers and buyers. She recently taught a class on this topic for Field's End.
Please call us at 206 780-2177 (or email) if you can offer a prize!

Mike Cyger re-launches Hashtags.org
 | Mike Cyger re-launches Hashtags.org |
Want to see how certain topics are trending on Twitter? Need some help to monitor how your own tweets are being picked up and passed on? In Twitter, keywords that start with a pound (#) sign are called hashtags, i.e. #USElections or #improvemysmartquota.
Hashtags.org is like Google Analytics for your Twitter marketing campaigns. OfficeXpats member Mike Cyger acquired Hashtags.org, the first social media analytics service, in January 2011 and recently announced a complete re-launch of the analytics service and website. The site currently serves about 100,000 unique monthly visitors.
"The analytics software is just one part of a comprehensive publishing and community site that includes articles and how-to content, news, a discussion forum, a crowd-sourced dictionary of hashtag definitions, a hashtag chat feature, an event calendar and resources for effectively managing social media marketing campaigns" said Michael Cyger in an interview with B to B. Hmmm, I found an article that was just my speed: 10 basic guidelines in Twitter for Beginners.

Leadership skills for entrepreneurs: "Keeping your head on straight"
This week, Alyse McConnell's session had us looking at the truth behind the overwhelming feeling most of us as business owners experience when we wear too many hats. It's not about not having enough time, says Alyse; insecurity and resistance gets in the way of focus and energy. And entrepreneurs by nature often avoid the very structure that would help us focus. Determine and then keep in mind our own "highest and best use," and even solopreneurs can gather a team around them to get important projects done.
Next week in Doug Nathan's session "Making the Deal," Doug shows how we enter into negotiations every day--with employees, customers, lenders, and even family members--trying to get what we want with the other's approval. With all that experience, you'd think we'd be confident negotiators. But most of us cringe at the thought of trying to get what we want if it means someone might drive a hard bargain or say "No." Successfully growing your business, and creating the life you want, requires adopting a negotiator's mindset. You'll gain insights that help you:
- Expose assumptions about negotiation that help and harm you
- Know when to compete and when to collaborate
- Create positive emotions for better results
- Look for the possibilities beyond "No."

Crowdfunding, anyone?
Rachel Maxwell and Casey Dilloway stopped by OfficeXpats to chat last Friday about an interesting lending model that is like Kickstarter but with eventual payback for the micro-loans that generally come from loyal customers. Rachel and Casey are co-founders of the startup company Community Sourced Capital. They will be presenting their business model at the Fledge Demo Day this coming Sunday, September 23rd, 6pm-9pm, at the Intiman Theater (sold out!). Here's a good review about the Fledge companies at Xconomy.com that includes Community Sourced Capital.
