OfficeXpats

Bainbridge Island at work... together!                                                            June 19, 2012

Greetings!

No plans to slow down this summer! The office is getting busier and it feels great. We are looking forward to taking a short break to celebrate the Grand Old Fourth, however. Look for our booth near T&C, and maybe even a parade showing!

Jason talks tech on Application Control at the West Sound Technology Association meeting, hosted at OfficeXpats

5:30 PM Thursday: Internet and social media applications are a common source of vulnerabilities and attacks, and even misuse by employees. Your business needs to understand and control which applications employees use. If not, you expose your business to viruses, malware, lack of productivity, and inefficient use of limited bandwidth.

Who We Are

 Kabissa's Africa Rountable

The next roundtable event at OfficeXpats is at noon on July 6. As usual Kabissa is bringing people together for networking and to learn from featured speakers about their projects in Africa. Whether you are able to come in person or want to join us remotely via Skype, you are very much invited! Click here to register.

  • Claude Salem discusses Partnerships for Capacity Development(P4cd), an educational non-profit providing peer-based and self-paced learning products to rural development professionals in Africa. It aims to alleviate the negative impact of geographic or professional isolation by networking the professionals, specialists and community leaders on the front lines of African rural communities.
  • Dave Danielson is a local lawyer and Bainbridge Island resident who has worked recently on a study of Uganda's IDP (Internally Displaced Person) policy to determine what went right/wrong, and what lessons are available for other countries around the world with significant IDP populations.
  • Larry Casazza is a Board certified pediatrician and public health specialist working in malaria and childhood survival programs with an emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa. He will discuss engaging the beneficiary communities for truly sustainable interventions.

Self-publishing for revenue and business building

Tuesdays at noon in June: In this workshop series, we explore why small businesses would want to use self-publishing services and navigate some of the choices and issues facing novice publishers.

TODAY: Session III is all about production and getting a manuscript press-ready. Press-ready means editing, proofing, and cover design. Choose between DIY vs. ghost publishing. Properly designing the text and the cover can influence whether a book store will stock the book or if a major reviewer will select it for review.

NEXT WEEK: Session IV, our last, we will walk through the steps to publish a real project, and by doing, transform Leslie from writer to published author. No pressure, really. Please RSVP here.

Workshop Themes for Summer: Save the Dates!

Steve WilsonTuesdays in July: What story is your photo telling? Learn what goes into creating a breathtaking image with  Steve Wilson, acclaimed photographer, filmmaker, and storyteller. He will share some of his five decades of experience as a photojournalist, with a portfolio from the Seattle World's Fair to LIFE and National Geographic. This interactive series will focus on your questions and your photos, so bring them! Meanwhile, here's Steve's latest project documenting American Street Philosophers.

Tuesdays in August: Advertising 101 for budgets of $50-$500/month. We've assembed a panel of experts to explain the latest trends and technologies in advertising, and to help you create a strategy that takes advantage of it all. You'll learn how to design your ad and target your audience in ways you never could before. We'll break down the best bang for your online ad buck by comparing cost per click vs. cost per impression. You'll learn about directory listings and ad packages. And yes, there are still great reasons to run print advertising too. Stay tuned... more to come.
