Bainbridge Island at work... together! June 12, 2012 |
|
Greetings!
Parents, you don't need to be reminded that school is out this week! If you need help finding a new groove away from distractions at home, we have a special offer for you. Welcome to summer, and celebrate happiness!
What could we learn from a Happiness survey on Bainbridge Island?
| A video by John De Graaf, "What's The Economy For, Anyway?" |
Last fall I went to a lecture at the University of Washington to hear John De Graaf answer the question "What's the Economy For, Anyway?" Even as he was supposed to be selling his new book by that name, what he was most excited about was a survey that portends to measure happiness. That survey is the basis for the Happiness Initiative, which is showing promise as an important new indicator of community vitality. The data from a local happiness survey can spark public discussion and be used to leverage social and policy changes. And John is coming to Bainbridge next week!
Friday, June 22, 4pm: You are invited to OfficeXpats for an informal discussion with Happiness Initiative co-founder John De Graaf, to find out how other communities have used the Happiness Initiative and to brainstorm possibilities for Bainbridge Island. This is intended to be a real discussion, and not a formal presentation. The ideal outcome is a rough consensus for why and how we might organize all of Bainbridge to take the survey, and then what we do with the results. Or, we can just have drinks and nibbles and enjoy the company of someone who takes happiness so seriously. Join the event here. |

Summer is here; are YOU READY?
For the kid-less among us, what is all the fuss about? But parents know... life at home will be a lot crazier, even as the same work deadlines loom. This summer, try a membership in a working community, either by the day or the hour. And then note the summer special offer... the best of both worlds.
- Café 10 and Café 20 are memberships with blocks of 10 or 20 hours per month to use whenever it suites you, M-F 8:30-5:30. Just $45 or $85 per month, and yes, you get coffee or tea as part of the deal, as well as a printer and some peace and quiet.
- Office Hours, Flextime, and Resident are daily memberships, and even based on a 6-hour day, the hourly rate is less than a fancy coffee. You can even reserve a private meeting room, invite up to 6 guests, and offer them coffee too!
Here's the summer offer: Start a daily membership and extend it for FREE with hourly. Get a gift card for 10 hours with an Office Hours membership, or a gift card for 20 hours with a Flextime membership. Sign in and out with your time. Use them by August 31.
To your productivity! |
Self-publishing for revenue and business building
Tuesdays at noon in June: In this workshop series, we explore why small businesses would want to use self-publishing services and navigate some of the choices and issues facing novice publishers.
Next week, June 19: Session III is all about production and getting a manuscript press-ready. Press-ready means editing, proofing, and cover design. Choose between DIY vs. ghost publishing. Properly designing the text and the cover can influence whether a book store will stock the book or if a major reviewer will select it for review. Please RSVP here. |
SPELL: a Writers Group
Wednesday June 14, 3pm: If you've become inspired by the Tuesday workshops and plan to publish your first book, why not have some fun with other writers as you hone your skills? The writer's group would enjoy hearing about your projects, and there is usuallly a lighthearted "prompt" to get you writing creatively for 10 minutes or so. For more info, contact Kathleen Alcala, kjalcala@gmail.com. |
