The flip side of a chaotic eonomic picture that has many of us 'alone in the wilderness ' as free agents may in fact be the emergence of something inspirational: a new standard of individual freedom in business. That's one of the findings reported in Leslie's talk on the Future of Employment, last week at the Bainbridge Chamber of Commerce luncheon. We should have a short video soon that excerpts some of the story.

 

Also at that event was John Powers, the Executive Director of the Kitsap Economic Development Association. He mentioned that another important development for the survival of small businesses is the support for crowdfunding that President Obama signed into law earlier this month. Here is a good article to read up on the significance of the new crowdfunding law. Warning... it may be a year or so before the SEC creates the necessary rules. In the meantime, here are some good guidelines when asking for funding or using online systems such as Kickstarter.

Social Media May: Five Tuesday events coming soon!

 

Social media is optional as a personal choice, but it's getting harder to ignore if you are running a small business. With the workshop series on video production (organized by Barry Peters) recently concluding on such a high note (the last session was a screening of videos produced by participants!), we are about to embark on a journey through the jungles of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and maybe revisit Google+.
  • May 1st is about what you need to know to get started, the rules of the road, and whether your company's Facebook page can replace your Web site.
  • May 8 we discuss using social media for customer engagement and retention.
  • May 15 explores advertising on social media
  • May 22 is about running a social media campaign, and the tools available to help.
  • May 29 is the all-critical "how to get found," how Google Places can help you, and what you need to know about "search engine marketing."

Annette Walker, an Xpat whose company Astonish Inc. helps small businesses capture mobile traffic for higher sales and more profits, is offering leadership for this series.
