A coworking community and conference center on Bainbridge Island March 12, 2012 |
|
Greetings!
By the time you read this, you may have to hurry to make it to the workshop "Spring Cleaning Your Website for Visitor Engagement" at 10am on Tuesday (3/13). Brian Creamer of SpiderLily Web Design and Larry Tice of Seattle Digital Video will show you how to engage site visitors and persuade them to answer your "call to action," such as to request an appointment or purchase your product.
 | You too can be a movie maker! |
Toward similar social media and marketing goals, you still have time to sign up for a series of four sessions on how to use today's low-cost technology to produce short videos for community social media or to make your business web site livelier and more SEO-friendly.
Four workshop sessions start Tuesday, March 20, 12-1:30 pm
(also March 27, April 10, and 17).
Mentors bring video experience, tips, and insights as we learn together to use low cost equipment with simple sound and editing techniques, discuss good documentary story-telling practices, and get hands-on demonstrations of inexpensive editing software. The workshops are structured around a best-practice curriculum but will allow for a range of skill levels. Guest mentors from the professional videography and filmmaking community will join us as available. To RSVP, or for more info, contact Barry Peters, 206-963-7701, Earth.Justice@gmail.com. $5 for each session (no charge to OfficeXpats members). |

March 18: Finding Dad, and an opportunity to expand a beloved national park
 | A young Ken Schneider |
In our country's past century we have won hard-fought protections for the safety of life and limb in our everyday world. But something is lost if we only live in that safe, controlled environment and never step into wild places to explore our own source of courage. My dad found great peace and personal inspiration in the national parks of the Southwest, and one of them eventually claimed his life. For a cause I know my father would have loved, I want to share photos and the story of his disappearance six years ago, and the chance discovery of his remains just last year.
Please join me for an evening with Brooke Williams, to discuss the importance of expanding Canyonlands, what's at stake, and how this might actually be accomplished. This is not a fundraiser; Brooke is looking for a few people in the northwest who he can connect with as advocates when he needs to influence our congressional team. You might become one of those people! Read more on our blog. This will be an intimate evening of drinks and appetizers with some quick presentations and follow-up connection and conversation. Give me a call at 206 355-9636, or RSVP here if you would like to join us. |
NEW Bainbridge/Kitsap Filmmaker Meetup
Monday, March 19, 7pm: Meet other Bainbridge filmmakers AND welcome Michel Orion Scott, director and cinematographer of the award-winning film, The Horse Boy, while he is in town from Austin, TX. Discuss Shawn Starks' idea for creating a 24-hr Bainbridge filmmaking event and festival, as New York and many other cities around the country have done. Seattle doesn't do this yet, so we could even draw from filmmaking communities there. Please forward this event to anyone you know who might be interested in this or future filmmaker meet-ups.

Soon to be ex-Xpat finds new coworking home
Tim Vandehey and his wife are moving their family to Kansas City to be near extended family. We are sad to see Tim go; as an after-hours member, it was fun to stop by on a weekend and find him hard at work meeting a publishing deadline, sometimes with blues tunes blaring away. But Tim won't be without coworking in his new home city. He was thrilled to discover a coworking space just a few yards from his front door! Take a peak at Innovation Cafe.
By the way, take a look at our recent blog A coworking state of the union at GCUC for trends in coworking spaces worldwide. |
Your Passport to members-only events
M embers of all levels, including the new Passport, are welcome to attend these member-only events, and please note that showing up just for the event doesn't require you to pay for (or use) one of your visits.
- Monday Morning Check-in at 9:30 am: Take a few minutes to announce your goals for the current week to other coworkers. A little public accountability can go a long way! It's also possible that by putting your goals out to a wider audience, you may find out about new resources or be offered a new perspective.
- Thursday Happy Hour at 4:30: The only agenda is to take a break and get to know other members. We host drinks and nibbles.
- Any community event, workshop, or meetup: We are starting to charge a drop-in fee of $5 for the learning events, but as a member there is no charge. We encourage you to come to as many as you can!
