A coworking community and events center on Bainbridge Island February 20, 2012 |
|
Greetings!
On March 2, the non-profit organization Kabissa sponsors its first Africa Roundtable, to be hosted at OfficeXpats. The purpose is to bring people on Bainbridge Island together who have a mutual interest in Africa for networking, featured speakers, peer learning and mutual support. Tobias Eigen knows there are a quite a number of Africa-related orgs on Bainbridge Island, and believes "we all should be talking to each other!"
The Africa Roundtable on Bainbridge Island meets for lunch on the first Friday of every month. The featured organization this month is Lumana. Founded in 2008, Lumana works to provide microfinance, savings services, and business education to rural Africans living in poverty so they can earn more and save for their families' futures.
In this relationship-based program, community members are organized into cooperative groups, paired with an appropriate business coach, given entrepreneurship training and savings planning services, and are provided small loans in rotating cycles. Lumana's co-founder Cole Hoover will talk about using technology to bring better programs to the disconnected and underserved poor communities of rural Africa. Click here to register, or join Kabissa (it's free) to learn about future roundtables. Call or e-mail Tobias Eigen at (206) 842-1467 for more info.

World Premier Screening of "Sacred Economics"
Charles Eisenstein is the author of Sacred Economics, a brilliant book of stories that explain the big picture of our money system in an optimistic but pragmatic vision of the future.
A new 30-minute film based on the book will live-stream around the world at 9:00 am PST on March 1, 2012. The film, directed by Ian MacKenzie (The Revolution Is Love) and co-produced by Velcrow Ripper (Occupy Love) and Gregg Hill, shares Charles' most important ideas with stunning animation from Brian Duffy and Adam Giangregorio. This short film is bound to inspire, catalyze, and accelerate the shift of money in the age of transition.
Please join us at 8:30am on Thursday, March 1 for this premier screening of Sacred Economics (which starts sharply at 9am), and enjoy breakfast, offered as a gift from Agate Pass Exchange members! Time is reserved for discussion following the screening. Bring a friend and leave inspired. Hosted by Agate Pass Exchange and OfficeXpats. RSVP here. |
7 Reasons to Use Google+ (and 5 not to)
 | Eric demonstrates Google+ to an attentive crowd |
We had a great group for our first Google+ workshop last week. Eric von Foerster--a Web master and marketing consultant--was an early beta tester of Google+, and he has been an enthusiastic advocate since its debut. I was particularly inspired by "hangouts," a video chat format that seems to hold potential as an incredibly easy webinar option (recordable too!) for small business. If we can pull it off, I'd like to see our next workshop have that as an option for those who can't make it in person. What do you think, would you join us virtually?
Social media marketing is a compelling topic for many of us needing to make the most of building community as we build our businesses. Would you like to see a regular OfficeXpats meet-up to discuss strategies and occassionally bring in speakers? Would you be interested in volunteering to help lead such a group? We can host and help make it happen, but we need leadership from the community to make it fly. E-mail me, leslie@officexpats.com. |
