Learn to tell your story: live audience, or short video?
Greetings!
Whether you have a big idea or an amazing product, good (and quick)storytelling is an important skill to have. Here are two learning groups, two modes of storytelling...
 | Presentation technology has come a long way in the past 100 years, but try to beat this 'Radioptican' for cool! Come in and see it! |
I had my first try at giving a prepared 5-minute talk last Thursday -- at the Chamber of Commerce After Hours event. I wrote it all out and practiced it to test how long it was. While not good for an Ignite performance (too much about thanking our co-hosts and explaining our business), I was glad I made myself stick to the short script.
When I meet up with the Ignite Bainbridge learning group this Wednesday (and every 1st Wednesday at 1pm), I plan to have a second presentation sketched out, for feedback and coaching, and to present it in May at our first Ignite Bainbridge performance. It's 'Toastmasters meets TED Talks!' Join us.
If a live audience is not your cup of tea, or if like most small businesses you know you need video content for social media marketing and search engine optimization (SEO), then jump in with The Short Video learning group, organizing now to offer collaborative workshops for creating high-impact, low budget videos. And if you interview someone interesting on Bainbridge Island, your video may have an audience on Inside Bainbridge! Yes, the founders of our 'homegrown online source for what's up on the rock' are excited about partnering to post our successes. Stay tuned for workshop dates! |

Kanban group analyzes workflow
 | To do, doing, done! |
Gary Knopp led a curious group with an introduction to Kanban last Friday, discussing both physical and online Kanban boards. He recommended LeanKit Kanban as the online tool of choice (free for a single board).
We used the OfficeXpats board with sticky notes as an example of one way to partition the columns of backlog/ready/work-in-progress/done into rows of workstreams (in our case -- sales, marketing, operations, and events).
Finally, we set our agenda for the next meeting by individually putting our topics of choice on sticky notes on the front windows, then we voted on which to prioritize. We had time to discuss one of the suggestions, "patterns," and agreed to watch for patterns appearing in OfficeXpats that might be tweaked to enhance our community. Topics that will have to wait until next time included how to acknowledge on the Kanban board all of the interruptions and distractions in a day. Join us every other Friday (next meeting is 2/10) to explore this tool for visualizing the workflow and bottlenecks of almost any business problem! Thanks, Gary, I'm hooked! |
1st Wednesday Networking
Don't forget 1st Wednesday Networking at 5:30pm this week (2/1/2012). This is an opportunity for local businesses (Bainbridge Island and our neighbors) to share what we do. Everyone gets a chance to speak for one minute to the group in addition to the usual networking.
Anyone can sign up to sponsor a future meeting (bring drinks and nibbles) and sponsors get a full five minutes to talk about their business or some initiative. Contact Ann Whitmore for more info. |

Who We Are |
"Our vision is to become THE place on Bainbridge Island where independent workers, small businesses, and big ideas find community and support."
OfficeXpats on Bainbridge Island is a workplace solution beyond commuting to the corporate office or working from home.
Coworking is about making the personal choice to work alongside other people instead of in isolation. We offer a shared "community" office for remote workers, independent consultants, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
OfficeXpats is located upstairs in the Pavilion on Madison, just a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal, through beautiful downtown Winslow. We hope to help you in your quest for 'new ways to work.'
