"Like a thumbtack on the teacher's chair"
Greetings!
| A resident of Dignity Village, Portland, by Steve Wilson |
Happy New Year! Think Week is over, but it opened our eyes to new ways of building community in 2012. Next week we will introduce a new type of membership that supports various interest groups, which are forming now!
What you need to know right now is that this Friday evening at 7pm may be the best event we offer all year. Not that we intend to take it easy for the next 51 weeks, but you really don't want to miss this.
"I think of my work as being like a thumbtack on the teacher's chair," says Steve Wilson, a National Geographic photographer and local Kitsap treasure, but known better in New York City art galleries than here. "I try to use my craft as a sneaky way of speaking truth to power," he chuckled.
See more below for the treat he has in store for us this Friday. Steve has also hinted that he would be willing to teach an ongoing class to passionate amateur photographers as part of our new interest group initiative. It was exactly what I was hoping for. |

"Street Philosophers: In Pursuit of Happiness"
 | Steve Wilson discusses his "Street Philosophers" project Friday at 7pm |
Steve was already at the top of his craft when he was recruited as the photographer for the book "Century 21" with author Murry Morgan about the Seattle World's Fair in 1962. He crawled all over the Space Needle before the elevators were installed, but it wasn't the kind of work that defines him.
While best known for his soaring landscapes and
poignantly expressive wildlife (such as those exhibited on the OfficeXpats' walls) Steve Wilson has turned his highly tuned attention to the social justice issues on the fringes of society, listening and photographing street people and learning about their sometimes highly developed self-governance practices. He became inspired to document the articulate wisdom and sensitivity he witnessed, knowing that his art could make the hard political issues a little harder to ignore.
As the featured artist of the January First Friday Art Walk, Steve previews his new book project "Street Philosophers: In Pursuit of Happiness" at OfficeXpats this Friday at 7pm. Steve will show as-yet unpublished photos and tell the stories of street people on Bainbridge Island, in downtown Seattle, and in a "permanent" homeless encampment called Dignity Village in Portland. Drinks and appetizers will be served. |
"Skills Trade" brown bag: Business writing as art
 | Dave Kragen discusses how to add sparkle to your business writing |
Tuesday, January 3, 12-1:30pm: Dave Kragen leads a Skills Trade brown bag to show how the usually mundane task of business writing can be fun and creative. "Consider your business writing 'chores' a chance to think creatively, to be artful" says Dave.
 | Not one but two novels in Dave's Killware Chronicles! |
Dave quotes from an anonymous BBC regular: "Being a published author and business writer, Dave Kragen must know something. He puts out a good deal of printed copy, novels, books, monographs, and gobbledygook, and he seems to like it." With credentials like that, you know you are in for a good time, and possibly a good story or two. For even more fun, let's put Dave on the spot: bring in a real life business writing challenge and see how he takes it apart! |
"First Wednesday" networking January 4
 | Mingling and connecting at OfficeXpats First Wednesday networking |
This Wednesday, 5:30-7pm, is our monthly networking event, and YOU are invited! It's an opportunity for local businesses to share with each other what we do. Each month we ask for 2-3 new sponsors to provide the drinks and snacks at the next month's event, and they have the opportunity for extended time to share their businesses with the group. Then we network. Questions? Call Ann Whitmore 206-890-4797

OfficeXpats on Bainbridge Island is a workplace solution beyond commuting to the corporate office or working from home.
Coworking is about making the personal choice to work alongside other people instead of in isolation. We offer a shared "community" office for remote workers, independent consultants, entrepreneurs, and small businesses.
OfficeXpats is located upstairs in the Pavilion on Madison, just a 10-minute walk from the ferry terminal, through beautiful downtown Winslow. We hope to help you in your quest for 'new ways to work.'
