Testing on the new License Plate Recognition (LPR) entry system on the residents' gate will start during the week beginning 30 January. Here's how it will work: As you approach the gate, an underground sensor will detect when the front of your vehicle reaches about 25 feet from the gate. The infra-red camera nearest the gate will then take a series of rapid electronic images ('frames') of your front license plate. After selecting the best image, the character s are identified using a neural network, and matched against our database of known residents/members. If most of the characters match, a signal is sent to open the gate. A perfect match of all characters is not required, since dirt could obscure a character, or it might mistake, for example, a 'B' and an '8'. The whole process is very fast, and the gate may start opening before you have come to a complete stop.
For vehicles without front plates we have installed a second camera, which takes additional images of the rear plate when the back of the reaches about 25 feet from the gate. This camera uses a yellow light, and you will see it flashing briefly when you pass through. If you don't have a front plate, then you should expect the gate to open only after you have almost reached it, and have come to a halt.

Tunneling for LPR Conduit
|
As part of the implementation we have buried a series of conduits under the ground to supply power and control wires from the gatehouse to the island. This involved having to tunnel under the path and roadway. We installed additional cable in these conduits so that, once the LPR installation is complete, we can use them to properly connect the wiring to both gate operators and lights, and eliminate the current buried wires which vulnerable to damage from animals and yard workers - this has happened on several occasions in the past.
We plan to run the LPR in parallel with the existing gate opening mechanisms until we have fine-tuned it, and then turn off the clickers and Flash2Pass. This could take anywhere from a couple of days to two weeks or more. So please watch the notice board at the gate entrance for latest information and instructions.
If you have not yet registered your vehicles for LPR, then please do so immediately if you intend to use the residents' lane. You can us this on-line form, or pick up a paper form at the gatehouse.
