An update from KHCAS Executive Director Hugh Nicholson
While most people observe the New Year January 1, at the Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Aid Society (KHCAS), our New Year begins on April 1st. Along with ample opportunities for practical joking, each new fiscal year brings new resolutions in the form of an Annual Plan. KHCAS' 2011-12 Annual Plan advances the Society's Strategic Plan by focusing on four key priorities: (1) enhancing our programs and services, (2) better coordination of children's services through community partnerships, (3) quality assurance and (4) healthy workplaces.
I would like to share with you some of the news from KHCAS, as well as recent developments in our field, including:
Thanks for reading, and I wish you all a great rest of the summer!
Hugh Nicholson

KHCAS STAFF IN PROFILE: TEDDI PAPPAS
In this new feature section, we hope to help you get to know a little more about the real lives of members of the KHCAS community.
Teddi Pappas first joined the Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Aid Society as a placement student from Sir Sanford Fleming College. Working out of our Lindsay office, Teddi provided support to the Family Service team where, amongst other tasks, she developed March break parenting classes.

KHCAS Staff Teddi Pappas
|
As anyone who has had the opportunity to work with Teddi knows, she is a very organized person with exceptional computer skills. Once these talents were recognized, Teddi was approached to provide administrative supports to the management team. Her role was recently expanded to include support of the Human Resources & Finance and Quality Assurance departments, where she helped deliver big time on this year's NQI Level 1 certification.
IN HER OFF HOURS While many staff know about Teddi's talents within the workplace, many may also be aware of her great passion which is the safe care, placement of and rescue of animals. Teddi has held executive positions with two registered charitable animal rescue organizations.
In addition to providing leadership and business knowledge to these organizations, she has also volunteered
for many hands-on activities like behavior consultation, fundraising; rescue; foster and palliative care. As a compassionate person, Teddi has also, on occasion, taken in stray/feral cats that have been lucky enough to make her's their home for longer stays (or forever).
And if all this was not more than enough, Teddi is also bilingual in oral French. She really is a tremendous asset to the Agency and the local community. We are grateful to have her.Joan Conrad Director of Accountability & Management Services

ENHANCING FAMILY PRESERVATION PROGRAMS
| |
KHCAS staff and management are proud of our programs to help parents and guardians develop the skills they need to keep their children safe. In 2010-2011 we aim to enhance these services by adding staff.
The Family Preservation Program will have additional staff who will work with families both in our access center and in families' own homes to teach and reinforce the skills families require to address protection concerns. Through this approach more children-at-risk will be able to remain safely within their families.

MAKING OUR FACILITIES & SERVICES MORE ACCESSIBLE
|
Thanks to a partnership with members of the Peterborough Council for Persons with Disabilities, we are working to improve the accessibility of our services. With the assistance of people like John MacDonald, Lois Harte-Maxwell and Carolyn Corp, the Society held a planning day as part of our Annual General Meeting to begin the process of better understanding the experience of people with disabilities and the priorities the Society needs to address to make our facilities and services more accessible.
During the day we had the opportunity to experience first-hand, some of the barriers faced by people with various disabilities, and to discuss how we could be more supportive. Kawartha-Haliburton Staff and Board members attended the planning and found the experience very beneficial. Click to see a news article and pictures of the day.
Susan Redhead, our Manager of Human Resources, will now take the information we learned at the planning day and develop an action plan for making our services more accessible.

MORE PERMANENT FAMILIES FOR YOUTH IN CARE
| |
With the passing of the Building Families and Supporting Youth to Be Successful Act, 2011 (formerly Bill 176),which removes access orders as a barrier for adoptions, we expect to see a continued drop in the number of Crown Wards in care as they move into permanent families under adoption orders. This will require the gradual shifting of resources to support this initiative.
Over the past three years the number of children who are wards of the Crown dropped by over 35% at Kawartha-Haliburton Children's Aid Society, significantly more than at other CASs in the Province. Under the new legislation we expect to see similar or greater reductions.
|
IMPROVING SERVICES FOR YOUNG ADULTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES
This year, the files of youth with developmental disabilities will transfer to the Ministry of Community and Social Services when these youth reach 18 years of age.
In the past youth with developmental issues were in a sort of "limbo" between the age of 18 and 21 as transfers were organized and funding was put in place. The new policy adds more stability to the lives of young people with developmental disabilities during this critical period and makes the transitional planning process more relevant and effective.
Local Agencies Identify Isses with Planning for Children with Disabilities
An issues paper prepared the Developmental Service Network's Children's Services Committee lists numerous issues related to serving children with diabilities. The paper calls for greater service coordination for these children and increased community understanding. For a copy of the issues paper please go to the Resources section of our website.
