STH 33 & I43 Projects                               Roundabout Tutorial

Traffic Signal

STH 33

All lanes are now open and the permanent signals in Saukville are now operational.  Weather permitting, the Village will begin planting the roundabout islands and street trees this fall.  Motorists are reminded that left turns from Plaza Drive (Walmart - west entrance) onto STH 33 are prohibited and will result in traffic citations when observed by the police.  The roundabouts are functioning as designed but will require those unfamiliar with them to educate themselves as to how to navigate them.  Roundabouts continue to increase their presence on state highways so it is important to learn how they operate.  The two most important points to remember is to slow down and yield to the motorist inside the roundabout.

Questions/Concerns about the I-43 project can be directed to the field office at 262-268-0059.

I-43

All the new lanes have been poured and crews are completing the parapet walls.  This work is still scheduled for an October 2012 completion and should not impact the STH 33 traffic or on/off ramps.

Trash & Recycle Collection Reminder

Garbage

Residents may have noticed that pick up times on trash and recycling days are occurring later in the day.  Veolia is scheduling their crews with other communities to make their operations as efficient as possible.  Our regular service will continue on Thursdays and residents still need to have their carts curbside by 7 a.m.  There have been instances of some neighborhoods being missed altogether due to new/substitute  drivers on the route.  Veolia assures the Village that this will be addressed.  As before, if your pickup has not occurred on the regular day, call Veolia at 800-387-0949 as soon as possible.  They can re-route their drivers from the Friday Port Washington pick-up to return to the Village.  Likewise, if your cart(s) have been damaged by the collection trucks, call and report it to Veolia immediately as they will replace them with a new cart at no charge.

September is Emergency Preparedness Month
September is National Preparedness Month.  Have you taken steps to prepare for an emergency?  According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), three elements of good preparation are:
  • Being Informed -- Learn about the potential emergencies that can happen where you live and know the appropriate ways to respond to them.
  • Making a Plan -- Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to plan what you would do in different situations. How would you get to a safe place? How would you contact one another and get back together?
  • Building a Kit -- Find a list of suggested items to include in an emergency supply kit.

Taking these steps could help you and your family in the event of an emergency.

The ReadyWisconsin website has more information on how to make an emergency supply kit on a budget, tips for creating your own emergency plan and commonly asked questions and answers about preparedness. Just go to: http://readywisconsin.wi.gov .  ReadyWisconsin is a preparedness program from Wisconsin Emergency Management.

 Cross Connection Inspections

Drinking WaterIn order to reduce overall costs for compliance with Wisconsin DNR Regulation NR810.15, the Village of Saukville Water Utility has contracted with Hydro Designs, Inc. (HDI), of New Berlin, Wisconsin to assist in managing our Cross Connection Control program as required by the State of Wisconsin.

What Is a Cross Connection?

A cross connection is a direct or potential connection between any part of the public water supply system and a source of contamination or pollution. The most common form of cross connection is a garden hose, which is easily connected to the public water supply system and can be used to apply a variety of potentially dangerous substances, including chemicals and fertilizer. Other common cross connections include dishwashers, toilets, pressure washers, boilers, pools, and lawn sprinkler systems.

HDI is sending postal notices and will be performing initial inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings throughout the Village to detect actual and potential cross connections and make recommendations for the installation of backflow prevention devices or assemblies where necessary. This will help ensure that contaminated or polluted water cannot backflow into clean drinking water. There is no cost for the inspection and each inspection takes less than 45 minutes on average for a business and less than 20 minutes for a home inspection.
