Change Batteries in Smoke and CO Alarms This  Weekend

clockDaylight Saving Time begins March 11

               .... Spring Ahead!

The Saukville Fire Department urges residents to replace the batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide(CO) detectors this weekend for Daylight Saving Time.  Fresh batteries allow smoke and CO detectors to do their jobs saving lives by alerting families of a fire or a buildup of deadly carbon monoxide in their homes.

If you have hard-wired detectors, they may have a battery backup to insure proper operation during power outages.

Tips for Saving on your Water Bill

Water is the state's most precious resource.  Without water, we could not live here.  Use it wisely.

  • Do only full loads of laundry or dishes in the dish washer.
  • Replace your shower heads with low flow types. Limit showers to  5 minutes.  This saves water and energy for heating the water.
  • Use showers instead of baths for regular hygiene purposes.  Filled bath tubs are also a safety risk for toddlers in your house.  It takes only a few inches of water for a small child to drown.
  • Check you toilets for leaking on a regular basis (twice per year). Place food coloring dye in the tank and check the bowl after an hour.  If the dye shows up, replace the flush valve.  Likewise, if the toilet makes a constant hissing sound, the fill valve may need to be replaced. water drip
  • Whenever replacing any plumbing fixture such as shower heads, toilets, dishwashers, wash machines  or faucets, opt for the low use models.

 Water Facts

  • There is enough water in the ground under Wisconsin to cover the entire state to a depth of 90 to 100 feet.
  • The average person uses around 60 gallons of water per day.  An average household of four uses about 20,000 gallons per quarter.  Check your next water bill to see how your household compares.
  • All used water from Village residences and industry that is flushed to the sewers eventually is discharged directly to the Milwaukee River following treatment.
  • Put it all in perspective - around 1,400 gallons of water are used to produce a quarter pound  hamburger with fries and a drink.
  • A gallon of gas takes six gallons of water to produce.
Income Tax Forms Available at Oscar Grady Library

The Oscar Grady Public Library has received federal and state tax forms for patron use.  However, each year more and more Wisconsin taxpayers are filing their state and federal income tax returns electronically.  In 2008, the government introduced e-file applications at the federal and state levels.  E-filing is a free and secure way to file your income tax returns.  It also allows those receiving refunds to get them within days -Income Taxesrather than weeks - by using direct deposit.
