2011 Highlights and 2012 Goals:

An Update from President Lisa Leiby

2011 has been a busy year for CCLC and it's time to celebrate our accomplishments. We began the year with an extensive "To Do" list. Now here is our "Ta Dah!" list:

  • Expanded our marketing and communication efforts through our Constant Contact Newsletter, new brochures and flyers, PSA's, and articles for Literacy Month
  • Updated to a fresh, new logo to identify us in the community
  • Put in place our first Tutor/Student Database system to upgrade our record keeping efforts
  • Reorganized our Tutor Training classes and added two new tutor trainers to our team
  • Provided quarterly Tutor In-service Workshops
  • Organized an inaugural Tutor/Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon
  • Implemented new student assessments
  • Created a student orientation process
  • Updated our website
  • Moved (and improved) our office (an involuntary goal!)
  • Became members of 3 organizations that support non-profits: Nonprofit Center of Northeast Florida, HandsOn Jacksonville and Shaping Clay
  • Joined the Adopt-A-Precinct Program to earn funds in 2012

Goals for 2012 include increasing our outreach and number of tutoring hours, providing an Adult Literacy Lending Library for leisure reading materials, securing a News for You online subscription as well as renewing our print subscriptions, providing a new computer-assisted instructional program as a supplement to tutoring and offering online coursework as a portion of our tutor training requirement.

We could not do any of this without both the financial and volunteer support of so many. Many thanks to all of you who have contributed your time and talent and treasure!

Please consider renewing your membership or joining this organization as a member to further enhance adult literacy in 2012. $25 and one "click" is all it takes!

Spotlight on a Tutor-Student Duo: Lee & Lizzie

"Lee has been a great help . . . I enjoy coming to my classes."

                                     - Lizzie (L), on her learning experience

Student: Lizzie

As a writing assignment, Lizzie wrote the spotlight piece below. She's taking big steps toward reaching her goals!

My name is Lizzie Carter. I am a mother of four daughters and have seven grandkids. I am caregiver to my husband. I am excited about going back to school and getting my G.E.D. I have been studying at Orange Park High for almost a year. My goal is to further my education.

The Clay County Literacy program and the Adult Education program have helped me. Dianne has encouraged me and assigned me a tutor. Lee has been a great help in preparing me for the G.E. D. test. My teacher Susan has been a very good director. I enjoy coming to my classes.

Another one of my goals is to study the Holy Bible. I attend a biblical history seminar and have gained much knowledge and understanding. My literacy training is also helping me to read the Bible.

Tutor: Lee

Lee retired a year and a half ago from Lender Processing Services, where she was a computer programmer for 20 years. She knew it would be the perfect time to begin tutoring. She tried it several years ago for 6 months, but her busy schedule didn't leave much free time for volunteering with CCLC. Her first student this time around was from Bangladesh. For the last 6 months, Lee has been working with Lizzie, a literacy student who she tutors in math and English.

Lee is from the New England area, where she earned her BS in math. Her professional background has mostly consisted of computer programming and software. When asked what motivated Lee to volunteer, she explains that she loves math and loves helping others learn the subject. She truly enjoys helping someone achieve the goals they set for themselves. Lee really takes each student's background into consideration, and recommends that other tutors do the same: "Understand the background that the students have and work with that." Lee enjoys helping Lizzie, and says she excels in reading comprehension.

Tutoring is now a part of Lee's life, alongside her church activities and personal hobbies.

CCLC in the Community

On November 21, in partnership with the Food Pantry of Green Cove Springs, CCLC volunteers distributed books to the children of over 75 families who were recipients of the Pantry's Thankgiving food bags. This year marks the 4th year for CCLC to participate in this program. Many thanks to our volunteers: Maria Vanegas and Julio Suarez, their children, Jolene and Julian Suarez, and Virginia Hash.

Heartfelt Appreciation to:

  • Helen Walker, who has served diligently as our board Secretary for 3 years. Helen is stepping down from her position on the board, but will continue to be a gracious and welcoming presence at some of our upcoming events.
  • Bobbi Moore, who has blessed us with her enthusiasm and gusto as our board Vice President this past year. Bobbi will also continue to be involved with CCLC in various capacities. We wish her vibrant health in the New Year!
  • All of our 2011 donors and members who make it possible to continue our mission of providing free tutoring along with materials at no cost.
  • All of our tutoring sites and personnel who welcome tutors and students with space to study:

Orange Park Library (Charlotte and Sandy)

Fleming Island Library (Sarah)

Orange Park High School Adult Education: (John, Gary, Erin, Carmella, Dawn and Bob)

First Presbyterian Church in Green Cove Springs (Ellen)

Weigel Senior Center in Middleburg (Maria)

And our newest site, Island View Baptist Church (Rita & Debra)

  • Our Adopt-A-Precinct Team: Lisa Leiby, Mike Day, Bobbi Moore, Linda Tanner and Beverly Beach. These individuals will be working the polls this January, earning funds for CCLC.

We express our most sincere congratulations to:

  • CCLC ESL student Laura Hargrove, who recently landed a job with Moosehaven in the Dietary Dept. Laura is a credentialed speech therapist from Argentina and once she gets her US credentials, will be able to do speech therapy at the same facility.
  • Past CCLC president Virginia Hash, who was named Clay County School District's Volunteer of the Year for 2011. This is the 3rd major award for Virginia this year!
  • Nalita (2010 Student of the Year) and her husband Henry on the birth of their son, Lucas Lackey, born Oct. 4th!

He's a shoo-in for Baby of the Year! Congrats, new Mom & Dad!
