a big success!!

Right: Carol, Alvaro, Beverly and Judy enjoy the lunch

Thirty-two tutors and volunteers gathered at the Orange Park Library Meeting Room on September 15th to meet, greet and eat! They were also acknowledged for all they do to enhance literacy and touch the lives of adult learners. Participants enjoyed a buffet lunch, an awesome cake displaying our new logo (donated by Publix), a Yankee gift exchange, door prizes and "A Volunteer Cheer". President Lisa Leiby served as emcee for the event and shared some poignant vignettes about our tutors and students, reminding us all why we volunteer. We'd like to acknowledge and applaud our Appreciation Luncheon Team for all their planning and efforts: Phyllis Weston, Linda Tanner, Virginia Hash, Helen Walker, Bobbi Moore, Luz Bratt and Carmen Barrows. We'd like to especially acknowledge Deb Banks for her role in securing the Weaver Family Foundation donation to make this luncheon possible! |

Spotlight on a Volunteer: Michael Day
|
 | | Michael Day (L) with Adult Learner Gary Francois |
"Have patience....and understanding."
- Michael's advice to other tutors
Michael Day has been volunteering with CCLC for 2 years. At first he was a tutor who became involved because his friend told him about it and the mission interested him. Michael now also serves on the Board of Directors and facilitates a Beginning Conversation class for English Speakers of Other Languages. This group currently includes adult learners from China, Mexico and Lebanon. The main goal of the small class is for students to become more comfortable with speaking English on a basic level.
Michael also works individually with an adult learner, Gary Francois who is from Haiti, on an individual basis. For the past year, he and Gary have met each week to work on reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar and related skills. Michael observes that Gary has come a long way in this short time, but mostly because he is a very driven individual who is focused on doing what he needs to do. Gary's goals include passing a college placement test and earning his General Education Degree. While it can certainly be rewarding to help others, the rewards don't always come quickly or easily. Michael recommends having patience and remembering that the students are usually struggling because of their literacy issues. Keep in mind that they have their own lives, their jobs and daily life issues.
WANTED: More dedicate board members! If you or someone you know would be interested in applying to serve on our Board of Directors, please contact us at clayliteracy@aol.com or 272-5988. You must be willing to make a commitment of your time and talent to help us fulfill the CCLC mission. If you have energy, experience, ideas, creativity and time to spare, we look forward to hearing from you!
