In Celebration of National Literacy Month...
Tutors & Volunteers: Mark your calendars!
Tutors and volunteers are the backbone of CCLC. Over the last 16 years they have provided Clay County with thousands of hours of tutoring to help its citizens improve their literacy skills and to promote our services at community events and fundraisers. The "common thread" that binds them is the desire to give back to the community and help others. CCLC would like to honor our dedicated Tutors and Volunteers with an Appreciation Luncheon!

Spotlight on a Tutor-Student Duo: June & John!

"I have a feeling that if you can read, you've always got a friend!"
- June
June retired just over a year ago after spending 30 years in the US Navy, where she worked in foreign weapon sales/support. She's always enjoyed teaching and helping others so when an acquaintance introduced her to the Clay County Literacy Coalition, June jumped right in. She began tutoring in March 2011 and has thoroughly enjoyed helping John gain confidence and skills. "When he reads a story and you can see the comprehension, it's just amazing," June says of John's progress. John is an adult learner who has some developmental disabilities. Despite the challenges he faces, John has a job and lives an independent life with a family member. June helps John with many life lessons including computer-related skills and math. But the single most important thing she imparts to John is confidence, which has increased since they first started meeting several months ago.
Thank you to June for all the work you do with John! |
