As a member of the Community-Academic Research Network you are first to hear about opportunities offered by the Detroit URC to facilitate collaborative research in Detroit. Starting today scholarships are available to attend a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Summer Short Course at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Read on to learn about this and other types of resources that are available. If you are not currently a member of the Network and would like to join, it is simple, contact us by phone or e-mail today.

The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development encourages Research Conference Grant (R13) applications to conduct health disparities-related meetings, workshops, and symposia.The purpose of the Academic-Community Partnership Conference Series is to bring together academic institutions/organizations and community organizations to identify opportunities for addressing health disparities through the use of CBPR.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases is requesting applications from institutions and organizations to test strategies to prevent and treat diabetes and or obesity. The approaches tested should have the potential to be widely disseminated to clinical practice, individuals and communities at risk.

The Detroit URC announces its second round of scholarships to attend the summer short course entitled, "Methods in Community-Based Participatory Research for Health". Starting July 16, 2012 a team of ten trainers (5 university researchers and 5 Detroit-based partners) will provide a week long training on collaborative research through the Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology based at the University of Michigan. Employees from Detroit community-based organizations and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion are eligible to apply (non-credit seeking only).

The 2012 Summit on the Science of Eliminating Health Disparities is now accepting abstracts for program sessions. The Summit is organized around the core principle of integrating science, policy, and practice, and offers a forum to advance scholarship and translate new knowedge into action. The Summit will take place from October 31 through November 2, 2012 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

The National Associationg of County and City Health Officials launched Roots of Health Inequity, the first comprehensive web-based curriculum about the root causes of health inequity. The site provides courses on strategies for taking action on health inequities. Units feature interactive presentations and case studies, readings, videos, audio, and group-directed discussions. The course is free and open to anyone interested in addressing the root causes of health inequity.

Welcome the New Center Manager of the Detroit URC!

 

Starting in April, Ashley O'Toole MPH, MSW, began as the Center Manager for the Detroit URC. A graduate of the University of Michigan School of Public Health and School of Social Work, Ms. O'Toole has a depth of experience engaging in collaborative research in Detroit. Prior to accepting the Center Manager position, she was the Project Manager for Community Action Against Astham, an affiliated partnership of the Detroit URC. Please join us in welcoming Ashley in her new role!

Detroit Works Project Community Conversations 

The Detroit Works Project (DWP) is hosting a series of Community Conversations in different neighborhoods throughout the city to let people know about actions being considered by the DWP, and to get input on strategies for the future of the city. Participants are encouraged to bring ideas on how to create jobs, use land better, provide city services and more. DWP also created  an interactive website where  input can be offered online. Join the Eastside Community Collaborative for the first annual Cycle into Spring, a pleasant 20-mile pedal from the Detroit River to Eight Mile and back along the Conner Creek Greenway (CCG). Sites along the route include Chrysler Mack Assembly, Wayne County Community College, Chandler Park, Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Conner Playfield, the Milbank Trailhead and more.
