This month's newsletter contains information about new programs taking place in Detroit, new health equity resources, and new funding opportunities. 

 

The Community-Academic Research Network is a virtual entity that involves a broad array of community organizations and academic researchers interested in conducting and disseminating collaborative research in the city of Detroit. Our newsletter contains resources to facilitate collaborative research in Detroit as well as news about current activities taking place. The Network is hosted and maintained by the Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (Detroit URC).

Funding Opportunities

Butzel Mini-Market_DetroitCommunity Food Project Competitive Grants Program

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is requesting applications for the Community Food Project Competitive Grants Program to support the development of projects that will meet the food needs of low-income people; increase the self-reliance of communities in providing for their own food needs; and promote comprehensive responses to local food, farm, and nutrition issues. Grants of up to $500,000 will be awarded to private, non-profit entities.

 

Aetna Foundation Racial and Ethnic Health Care Equity Grants

The Aetna Foundation is awarding grants to organizations interested in improving health and health care among the nation's Medicaid population, particularly among underserved populations. The foundation also wants to drive improvement in one of the longest-standing disparities in health care- infant mortality. Awards range from $25,000 to $250,000 depending on the scope and scale of proposed projects.

Article: How Cumulative Risk Warrants a Shift in our Approach to Racial Health Disparities

Recent research has shown that social and environmental factors-such as high levels of stress and exposure to lead-may explain racial disparities in hypertension. This new commentary recommends that governments and research institutions shift their approaches to health disparities to focus on cumulative risks associated with social and environmental factors, such as stress.

Future Public Health Leaders Program to Fund Student Internships in Detroit

Future Public Health Leaders

Dr. Richard Lichtenstein, Co-Director of the Detroit URC, was recently awarded a $4.2 million grant over five years to expand the minority undergraduate student recruitment and internship program through the University of Michigan School of Public Health (SPH).  The program is called Future Public Health Leaders.  Part of the program will fund student internships at health-related organizations throughout Southeast Michigan. The program addresses and recognizes the need for a more diverse public health work force to eliminate health disparities and promote health equity. It also aims to increase diversity in the leadership ranks of the public health work force. The first cohort of 50 students will arrive in May 2012, with 25 each from the SPH departments of Health Behavior and Health Education, and Environmental Health Sciences.

 

 

Deliberative Engagement Community in Decisions about Research Spending (DECIDERS) Project Begins in Detroit 

  

Starting last month, the Deliberative Engagement Community in Decisions about Research Spending (DECIDERS) project was funded $2.8 million through the National Institute on Aging. Network members Dr. Susan Goold, Professor of Internal Medicine and Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan and Zachery Rowe, Executive Director of Friends of Parkside will lead the project in Detroit. The 4-year long collaborative effort aims to develop and evaluate a mechanism to engage communities, particularly minority and underserved communities, in informed deliberations about health research spending priorities. The project also aims to advance the science and practice of community engagement, and contribute to a more just and equitable system of health-related research. More information about the newly funded project will be provided as project activities develop.

National Health Promotion Summit

The Department of Health and Human Services Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion is requesting innovative disease prevention and health promotion programs for presentation at the 2012 National Health Promotion Summit: Prevention. Promotion. Progress., April 10-11, 2012 in Washington, DC. Goals of the summit are to: promote the development of disease prevention and health promotion policies that align with national prevention initiatives; encourage stakeholders at every level to collaborate on reaching national health goals; and to integrate health policies across all sectors. 
 

Service Learning Models: Increasing our Capacity to Eliminate Health Disparities
October 29, 2011 @ American Public Health Association Annual Meeting and Exposition, Washington, DC, 1:30pm-5pm 

Community Campus Partnerships for Health teams up with the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health to put on this valuable Learning Institute. The purpose of the Institute is to describe the practice and value of innovative service learning teaching formats that immerses students in an environment of health disparity and to build the skills needed to develop and implement a service learning course.

Friends of Cass Park are holding a Buzz 'N Shave clean-up effort including tree trimming, pruning, weeding, and general maintenance at Cass Park across from Cass Technical High School. Equipment will be provided, as will caffeine and calories.
