Funding Opportunities

Healthy People 2020 Community Innovations Project  

Application Deadline: August 5, 2011

Healthy People 2020 As part of a contract with the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Jonh Snow, Inc. is funding non-profit, community-based organizations with budgets less than $750,000 to implement projects that address Healthy People 2020 goals and integrate at least one of the following priorities: environmental justice, health equity, and healthy behaviors across all life stages. As many as 170 projects will be given between $5,000 and $10,000.

MICHR Pilot Grant Program 

Application Deadline: September 15, 2011

The Michigan Institute for Clinical & Health Research (MICHR) is requesting applicants for its Pilot Grant Program. Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded for Community-University Research Partnerships to promote translational research that addresses priority community health needs with projects that directly involve community participation. All University of Michigan clinical and research faculty are eligible to apply.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation Proposal Development Awards  

Application deadline: Continuous   

Blue Cross Blue Shield

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) Foundation is awarding small grants of up to $3,500 to support Michigan-based nonprofit community organizations interested in creating new health care initiatives. The awards will help nonprofits obtain grant writing resources so they may secure the funding they need to bring creative community-based health care programs to life.

REACH Detroit Published in American Journal of Public Health!

REACH Logo The REACH Detroit Partnership recently published an article in the American Journal of Public Health entitled, "Effectiveness of a Community Health Worker Intervention Among African American and Latino Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomized Control Trial". The study contributes to the growing evidence for the effectiveness of community health workers and their role in multidisciplinary teams engaged in cluturally appropriate health care delivery.

New Article: Moving from Community-Based to Community Driven Participatory Research   

Montoya MJ, Kent EE.    

Proponents of community-based research advocate for the active engagement of community members; however to create the conditions in which expertise is mutually constructed a reconsideration of the fundamental ethos of community involvement is required. This article assesses the definition of community health, focus groups, and dissemination and introduces a type of action that goes beyond traditional focus group methodology to promote dynamic dialogue among campus and community stakeholders.

CBPR Curriculum and Tools Available Online!   

CBPR ToolkitThis free Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) curriculum is available online. The curriculum is intended as a tool for new and existing community-institutional partnerships that are using or planning to use a CBPR approach to improve health. The Detroit URC helped develop the curriculum!

News & Updates

The Detroit URC Awards Collaborative Research Small Planning Grants  

The Detroit URC is pleased to announce the award of its 2011 Detroit URC Collaborative Research Planning Grants. One award went to partners Laura Hughes, from the Ruth Ellis Center, and Dr. Louis Graham from the University of Michigan School of Public Health to support the Detroit Youth Sexual Spaces Project. The other went to partners Sharon Lapides, from Community & Home Supports, and Dr. Barbara Brush, from the University of Michigan School of Nursing, to support the Aya Collaborative in Detroit. The Small Planning Grants aim to enhance the capacity of academic and community partners to conduct and disseminate health research in Detroit. Congratulations to our recipients!

 

Construction of the New CHASS Southwest Center is Underway
New CHASS Center

Community Health and Social Services Center (CHASS) has begun construction of its new and improved building. The first floor walls are already up and occupancy is planned for April 2012. CHASS is conducting a survey to determine new programs for the Center and is expanding its conference room facilities. Community WalkHEP Community Riverfront Walk  

July 23, 2011

 

The Healthy Environments Partnership (HEP) 

is hosting a free community walk along Detroit's beautiful Riverfront. There will be walks ranging from 1 to 3 miles to choose from. Walkers are encouraged to bring friends and family. There will be prizes and giveaways along with healthy food tastings! All ages are welcome and encouraged.

2011 Conference on Environmental Justice
August 23-26, 2011   

Save the date for Detroit's 2011 Environmental Justice Conference: One Community - One Environment. Conference topics will include: Models for Effective Community Engagement & Capacity Building; Strategies for Addressing Pollutions Sources that Impact Communities; Federal Interagency Working Group on Environmental Justice, and more. A call for abstracts will be posted on their website soon.
