Funding Opportunities

CIAHD Minority Health & Health Disparities Grants 

Application deadline: May 12, 2011
The University of Michigan Center for Integrative Approaches to Health Disparities (CIAHD) announced its 4th Annual Call for Pilot proposals. The CIAHD will provide up to $25,000 in pilot funding for innovative research consistent with the general theme of the integration of social and biological factors in understanding minority health and health disparities. CIAHD will fund up to 3 competitive proposals for investigators interested in the area of minority health and health disparities.

RWJF Public Health Services and Systems Research 

Application deadline: May 24, 2011 

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation will award $2.7 million to up to 14 applicants submitting proposals for Public Health Services and Systems Research, which involves examining the organization, financing and delivery of public health services within a community and determining the links between the quality and performance of the public health system and population health outcomes.

Detroit URC Collaborative Research Small Planning Grants 

Application deadline: May 30, 2011 

The Detroit URC begins its first cycle of Small Planning Grants to Foster New Collaborative Research in Detroit. The Detroit URC will provide up to $2,000 to support newly developing community-academic partnerships and up to $4,000 to develop specific new collaborative research efforts. NIMHD Health Disparities Research Grants (R01) 

Application deadline: June 14, 2011 

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities Research is soliciting proposals for innovative research that can directly and demonstrably contribute to the elimination of health disparities. Grants of up to $250,000 will be awarded to higher education institutes, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and other entities.

Collaborative Research Resources

Scholarships Available for CBPR Summer Short Course  

Application Deadline: May 18, 2011

Sign up for the Detroit URC's summer short course entitled, "Methods in Community-Based Participatory Research for Health". Starting July 18, 2011 a team of ten trainers (5 university researchers and 5 Detroit-based partners) will provide a week long training on collaborative research through the Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology based at the University of Michigan. Employees from Detroit community-based organizations and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion will be eligible to request a scholarship to attend the training (non-credit seeking only). This article discusses how community advisory boards (CABs) commonly formalize the community-academic partnerships that guide CBPR by providing a mechanism for community members to have representation in research activities. The article describes best processes for forming, operating, and maintaining CABs for CBPR.

Detroit Works Project: Environmental Justice Summit 

May 5, 2011, 4-8pm, Gleaners Community Food Bank  

The Detroit Works Project is hosting an Environmental Justice Summit to discuss issues impacting the environment in Detroit. The goal of the meeting is to provide opportunities for Detroit residents to give voice to alternative environmental justice perspectives. It will include discussions on air, waste, water, land, pollution, energy, zoning, green jobs, greenways, environmental justice, remediation, sustainability, energy, recycling, composting, agriculture and more.

Detroit Food Systems & Policy Summit    

May 19 & 20, 2011  

The Detroit Food Policy Council is hosting the 1st Annual Detroit Food Summit, "Powering Up the Local Food System", at the Historic Eastern Market in Detroit. The Summit is designed to educate and inspire Detroit citizens, including elected officials and other leaders, to be actively involved in food security and other food related issues in Detroit.

PolicyLink Equity Summit 2011   

November 8-11, 2011  

Equity Summit 2011 is the 4th national PolicyLink Summit, bringing together the nation's equity movement-- fellow advocates, activits, policymakers, foundation officials, and equity leaders-- to advance a truly inclusive policy agenda. The Summit will be held in Detroit and will focus on sustainable and equitable development with access to jobs, transportation, education, health and housing for all. The Detroit URC Goes to the White House   

Detroit URC Board Members, Melissa Valerio, Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and Celia Williams, Director of Community Schools at Communities in Schools were invited to the White House to meet the Let's Move Campaign staff. First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign is focused on raising a healthier generation of kids. They shared information about the Health Literacy Partnership, an affiliated project of the Detroit URC and the REACH Detroit Partnership, and discussed their efforts to address functional health literacy and type 2 diabetes prevention in Detroit.

Angela Reyes

Detroit URC Board Member Wins Award

New Detroit announced the recipients of its 2011 Closing the Gap awards. The individual honoree is Angela G. Reyes, founder and executive director of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation. Reyes is being recognized for her longstanding efforts to reduce gang violence in southwest Detroit and will be honored at the 13th annual Closing the Gap Award Dinner on June 22 at the MGM Grand Detroit Hotel Ballroom.
