The Community-Academic Research Network (the Network) is a virtual entity that involves a broad array of community organizations and academic researchers interested in conducting and disseminating collaborative research in the city of Detroit.  Funding Opportunities HEP Mini-Grants
Application deadline: April 15, 2011 The Healthy Environments Partnership (HEP) is awarding its second round of mini-grants of up to $1000 to community groups developing sustainable projects and activities that engage community residents, build local ownership of the Detroit greenways, and create social and physical environments conducive to active living and heart health.

URC Collaborative Research Planning Grants
Application deadline: TBD
The URC is beginning its first cycle of planning grants to foster the establishment of new community-academic research partnerships and new collaborative research projects. Grants will be awarded for up to $2,000 to support newly developing partnerhsips and $5,000 to develop specific new collaborative research efforts.  Upcoming Events Summer Short Course on Collaborative Research Register by: May 31, 2011 Sign up for the URC's summer short course entitled, "Methods in Community-Based Participatory Research for Health". Starting July 18, 2011 a team of ten trainers (5 university researchers and 5 Detroit-based partners) will provide a week long training on collaborative research through the Graduate Summer Session in Epidemiology based at the University of Michigan. Employees from Detroit community-based organizations and the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion will be eligible to request a scholarship to attend the training (non-credit seeking only). The Detroit URC Gets a New Website
The Detroit URC website is being revamped to include a more interactive and user friendly interface. The new website will supply e-resources for conducting collaborative research, news & updates about the URC, a directory of members who are part of the Community-Academic Research Network, and a cleaner more vibrant look and feel. Look for the new site to go live in May at www.detroiturc.org.

 Instructional CBPR CD-ROM Now Available The Detroit URC and the Michigan Public Health Training Center are pleased to announce the availability of an instructional CD-ROM entitled, "Community-Based Participatory Research: A Partnership Approach for Public Health". The CD-ROM provides an introduction to community-based participatory research (CBPR) for people who are in the early stages of using or considering using CBPR. Copies of the CD-ROM and downloadable files are available for free. Learn more Community Action Against Asthma (CAAA) Shares Intervention Results Community Action Against Asthma (CAAA),an affiliated partner of the Detroit URC, is working to improve the health of children with asthma in the East and Southwest sides of Detroit through the Intervention for Childhood Asthma Using Air Filters and Air Conditioners. As of Fall 2011, CAAA finished collecting data from 126 families of children with asthma in the form of indoor air monitoring, lung function testing and asthma management surveys. Now, CAAA is visiting families who participated in the study to discuss the results of the asthma tests and provide individualized feedback. Stay tuned for updates, CAAA will be sharing results from the intervention study soon. |

Report Finds Detroit is Ready for New Investment
In the face of the national recession, many of Detroit's neighborhoods are continuing to show strong market strength for retail and other economic investment. The Social Compact 2009 DrillDown Report shows that while Detroit experienced an overall population loss, many neighborhoods remained stable or had grown slightly since the 2000 U.S. Census report. Authors of the report highlight what they think are some of the city's greatest investment opportunities.

 Detroit Independent Film Festival (DIFF)! When: March 9-12, 2011 The 2nd Annual Detroit Independent Film Festival (DIFF) will be a five night film festival dedicated to screening the very best short films from Michigan and across the US. It will be held at the new Burton Film Theatre and on the Wayne State Campus. The festival will include an opening night gala, informative panels, work shops, discussions, an award ceremony with over 30 film categories and will draw in a large movie going audience.
