Do You Feel like a Juggling Act ?

Women in general find themselves "juggling it all". Why is that? We were taught from a very young age that we can handle it. After all.. we are strong, capable, and great at mulit-tasking..... right!  WOW! Feeling the pressure of "juggling it all" and actually being told that  you can "juggle it all" is enough to send us into a tailspin.

Looking at your life, reflect upon what you are juggling and try to throw a few of those balls up,  but this time, don't be there to catch them! Seems scary, but rest assured, another woman will catch it.. We are not clowns or on the Las Vegas Show Circuit. If we wanted to be a "juggling act" we could find a way to do that. You deserve to know you are a class act no matter how many balls you are juggling. ~

We Missed You!

What You Missed in April

For those gals who were not able to attend last month.  Our featured Non-Profit Organization was The Chrysalis Foundation.  Terry Hernandez, the Executive Director was with us.  She is such a great voice for the Chrysalis Foundation.  She shared that Chrysalis is the only public foundation in Greater Des Moines dedicated exclusively to girls and women, giving them a voice in the larger community.  They have long recognized that educating girls and women is critical to changing their lives.  We truly enjoyed her visit!

Our guest speaker was Sally Cooper Smith with Cooper Smith and Company.  Her talk was on branding your business.  WOW - what a great topic for our members!  Cooper Smith and Company works extensively in developing identities, marketing promotions, and publications for direct consumer and business to business markets.  Thank you to Sally for a fantastic talk and for giving her time to us.

Attendance was outstanding at both our locations last month with new members at each.  We look forward to seeing you this month either on Monday, May 23rd in Ankeny @ Noodle Zoo or Tuesday, May 24th in Clive @ Walnut Ridge. We will be offering complimentary blood pressure checks from 11:30-12:00!  Hope to see you there!

Member Spotlight

Cheryl Hayes

Each month WOW spotlights a WOW Woman Business Owner that has been outstanding in her business and community involvement. This month, WOW would like to feature Cheryl Hayes with the Hyatt Place, the Funky Zebras Boutique and the Traveling Marketplace.

Cheryl has been a WOW "Groupie" since our inception.  She has been one of our biggest cheerleaders and has served on the board of advisors for two years.  She brings a wealth of new and exciting ideas to WOW and loves what WOW has done for women in the Community.

As a woman business owner, Cheryl wears many hats and wears them all very well.  Her new role as the General Manager of the new Hyatt Place Hotel in downtown Des Moines and the launch of her new business adventure, the Funky Zebras Boutique in Ankeny keep her very busy.

The Funky Zebras Boutique is a unique boutique that is open three days a week. (Thursday 1-8 pm, Friday 10-6, and Saturday 9-5) They carry a wide variety of purses, jewelry, clothing, home décor and much more. They also host Diva Fundraising Parties that raise funds for local organizations.

In addition, Cheryl is the founder of the Traveling Marketplace.  This is a unique group of vendors that showcase their wares every 2nd Friday of the month at the Kaleidoscope in downtown Des Moines.

Keep Cheryl in mind if you're looking for a place to hold a meeting, want to be a vendor, or hold a Diva Party.

Cheryl is married to Mark Hayes and they live in Rhodes, Iowa at the Harvester golf course with their three dogs, Max, Boots and Tex.  They also have three grown daughters, Colleen, Emily, and Jessica along with two and ˝ grandchildren who all live in Dallas, Texas.

Cheryl's philosophy in life is that if you give to the Community, the Community will give back to you twice as much.

Please join us in recognizing Cheryl Hayes as an outstanding businesswoman and our "WOW Woman" of the month!

Business Growth Tip

Are You at a Fork in the Road?

In my role as a health and nutrition counselor, I work with many women who are busy entrepreneurs and high achievers. Some come to me after something goes terribly wrong with their health. They may have noticed symptoms, received a frightening diagnosis, or gotten test results showing that an old problem is back. These are smart women I am talking about. They run successful businesses, win awards and juggle busy lives.  And yet many wait until the red indicator light appears on their health dashboard. Then-on top of dealing with their physical challenges-they find themselves losing time and productivity in their careers, which adds more stress, guilt and drama.  So what's a gal to do?  You know the answer, although the actual protocol/areas needing attention may be different for you than for your sister or best friend.  Just promise yourself you'll do something-how about right now?-to ensure the health of you and your career. Meanwhile, may all your forks in the road be delicious.

  Personal Growth Tip

When I first heard "according to the American Medical Association over 90% of illness is stress related", I was impressed. I changed my career due to stress related health issues. My career change turned out to be a blessing for me. Over these 12 past years I've learned through experience what works for me to help reduce stress and keep me healthy.

Here are some tips:

*Start walking without head devices and see how many people you can say Hi to!

*In the car or at home replace background noise with inspirational speakers or calm music!

*Always keep feel good movies handy!

*Call a close friend or family member!

Now, after anyone of these, start to notice how you feel!

What I have noticed over the years is that I've developed these new habits of feeling good which help me reduce stress and stay healthy. So these are things that make me feel good , find things that make you feel good and make your own new habits!
