P-16 Expands ACT EXPLORE

In 2010, ACT EXPLORE http://www.act.org/explore/, a curriculum-based educational and career planning program that measures achievement in English, math, reading and science, was made available to 2,100 Eastern Ohio students by grants garnered by The P-16 Partnership for Education.  We set a 2011 goal of 2,600 students; we are proud to announce that we've met and exceeded our goal.  ACT EXPLORE will be offered to close to  3,000 students in our Eastern Ohio counties.

2011 Business/Education Summit
Barbara Williams & Anna Marie Vaughn
Barbara Williams, Anna Marie Vaughn, and their team discuss opportunities for local students.

The Summit was attended by over 120  business and education leaders throughout a four county region. It provided an opportunity for area business and education leaders to exchange ideas and strategize about student success. The messages received from the conversations were similar; students need to work on soft skills such as showing up for work on time and dressing appropriately.  Businesses said they are also looking for students who have good presentation and time management skills.  Business leaders and educators agreed that social media is an often used tool to find out more about students

The P-16 Partnership will continue to work with this group of educators and business leaders to help bridge transition gaps.  Look for a follow up Summit in Spring 2012.  During the 2012 Summit we will break into actionable work groups and create strategic next steps.

We would like to thank our sponsor The Frank & Pearl Gelbman Foundation for their generous contribution.  We would also like to thank the dedicated members of the P-16 Community Engagement Team.

Excellence in Education

Building principals, teachers, superintendents, board members and parents gathered at Mahoning County Career and Technical Center to recognize over 100 building principals, faculty and staff throughout Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties that were rated Excellent or Excellent with Distinction on the Ohio Report Card.  "The turnout was great; district leaders appreciate being recognized for their hard work," said John Rubesich, Ashtabula County Educational Service Center Superintendent.

The speaker for the luncheon, Dr. Michele Scott Taylor, College Now, Greater Cleveland, provided a poignant message that touched many in the room.  Dr. Scott Taylor praised the districts for their accomplishments and thanked them for not only educating the students, but for providing the "human element".  "Having a teacher that mentors you is very valuable.  When you know someone cares, that makes a world of difference,"  said Scott Taylor.

The event was also an opportunity to honor Haley Shafer, Poland Middle School, P-16's Innvoative Teacher of the Year and Alex Benyo, Vice President, Brilex Inc., P-16's Business Partner of the Year.  Congratulations to these individuals for going beyond the call of duty!

The Excellence in Education event would not have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors:  Dominion East Ohio - The Dominion Foundation, Kent State University at Trumbull, Youngstown State University, Eastern Gateway Community College and Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.

Congratulations

The P-16 council would like to congratulate Barb Ewing, Youngstown Business Incubator COO and P-16 Board of Directors member, for her recent appointment to the Help Hotline Crisis Center board. A Salem resident, Ewing is a licensed counselor and former staff member for Congressman Tim Ryan.

Our organization continues to grow. We are working with a local university and local school district to discuss bringing a STEM (Science Technology Math and Science) program to our region. We've worked with local businesses and local churches to partner on LEADING forward, our mentoring program, and we've become more engaged with local principals and counselors.  It's been a great year.

If you are interested in participating - give us a call or send an email!  It takes a village.

Sincerely,

Stephanie
