Why Mentor A Student?

Mentoring Works!  A study done by Be A Mentor shows that students who have a mentor are 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 37% less likely to skip class and 33% less likely to hit someone.

As a high school student I had a host of adults help me through the process of getting ready for college and for life; though never in a formal one-on-one mentor situation, their input and concern made a difference in my life.

This is a call for you to step up and make a difference in the lives of students in Trumbull & Mahoning counties.  I promise you will get as much out of the experience as they will.

How Can I Help?
Mentoring Pic
We recognize everyone can't be a mentor, work and family obligations are some of the challenges faced.  But, if you can't mentor, you can still help.  There are several ways: pass this information along to other potential mentors, sponsor a mentee (the cost per student is $5000, but any amount will help); volunteer to help raise funds for the mentees, provide comp time to your employees - if they volunteer allow them "time off" during the week; be an advocate - tell everyone you know about the program.  If we plan on changing the perception of our community we all have to help educate our students!

About Our Progam...

Our mentorship program, LEADING forward, is designed to transform the lives of students.  Talented, motivated students have the potential to reach great heights; we will provide the resources to help them get there.

LEADING forward will help low income, first-generation college going students prove that there are no boundaries they can't overcome with hard work, dedication and support!  Students will be required to have a GPA of 2.5-3.4 and they must be willing to commit to a four hour Saturday program that will run the course of the academic school year. Mentees will also have the opportunity to attend an on-campus college program designed to help them with not only academics, but also with concerns about transitioning from home to a campus setting.

The program will be led by a group of young professional volunteers who recognize the value of being prepared not only for post-secondary education, but also for life.
