A Successful SPARK for Local Students

Students entering Kindergarten are given the KRA-L (Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Literacy) test to measure their preparedness for Kindergarten; KRA-L measures letter word identification, story recall, understanding of directions, spelling change, passage comprehension and applied problems.  KRA-L is scored on a scale of 1 - 29.  Ohio has a mean KRA-L score of 20.3.  Students who are a part of the Warren SPARK (Supporting Partnerships to Assure Ready Kids) program scored an average of 20.7 on the state KRA-L, an average of 4.2 points higher than non-SPARK participants.

SPARK is a program that helps prepare children for

Kindergarten by building reading, language and social skills. It is currently offered in two Warren City elementary schools and has grown from 42 children in 2008 to nearly 50 in 2010 thanks to excellent managment by the team at Community Solutions Association Inc., and the generosity of The Raymond John Wean Foundation.

Academic year 2010 The Wean Foundation will increase community capacity by supporting a SPARK program in Youngstown. D&E Counseling will manage the Youngstown program.

The P-16 Partnership held a formal reception to kick off its educational mentoring program - LEADING forward -  Feb. 10 at the Youngstown Club. Community leaders came together to hear more about the program, which pairs mentors age 45 and under with local first-generation college going students, to offer college readiness skills and preparation training for the SAT and ACT exams. For more information or to become a mentor, contact info@easternohio16.org.

ACT Explore

With the school year flying by, students approaching high school or in their beginning years of high school may be facing tough decisions about preparing for college. The ACT Explore program may be able to help. This program is designed to help 8th and 9th graders explore a broad range of career options and is available locally in 19 of the school districts throughout Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties. Participating eighth grade students take an exam - similar to the ACT - that evaluates strengths and weaknesses in various subjects and uncovers career interests.

The P-16 Partnership is looking for opportunites to expand the program.  If you are part of an organization that supports local education initiatives, give us a call.  We would love to partner with you to help all Eastern Ohio students.

The P-16 staff is excited about all of our programs, especially about LEADING forward, our mentoring program, which will begin with the 2011-12 school year. It is our hope that these important initiatives will inspire and enhance our Northeast Ohio students' educational experience.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Shaw

Executive Director
