Terminate a Service the Simple Way.
The PLCS Service Terminator |
|
Some of us like to live our lives by abiding to the KISS principle. "Keep It Simple, Stupid" reminds us that it is usually best to take the simplest solution to most problems. This principle can be applied to many business activities, such as planning, management, and development. We can also use it when choosing Gas-Free* tooling for terminating services.
Transitioning to Gas-Free* tooling should not be perceived as complicated and dismissed at first glance despite its enhanced safety. So why should we perform an old job in a new way when we can just suit up, put on the air supply mask and jump in the hole to cut off a service? After all it doesn't take long; so we are saving money right? Well, what about the time setting up the PPE, the cost of fresh air bottles and the increased risk to life and limb by entering a gaseous atmosphere. Multiply that task by the number of times performed a year and an accident is statically inevitable.
A very effective method of terminating ¾" - 2" metal services (working at up to 10 psi) is to use the PLCS Service Terminator. A small hole is drilled Gas-Free* into the service and a special non-hazardous mastic is injected into the service providing a temporary stopper. The pipe can then be cut and capped with no risk to the operator. The whole operation is quick, safe, cost efficient and done without requiring a flash suit or personal air supply.

"R" Your Tapping Machines Outdated?
The ALH System-Three Tapping Machine |
|
These days keeping a large diameter drilling and tapping machine in top shape can be a challenge. Many tool rooms have the daunting task of locating replacement parts for a 50 year old machine and in some cases these machines are now so outdated that manufacturers have stopped making the parts. So what is a gas distribution company to do? Is it practical to wait 6 or perhaps 12 months for the part to come in before making any taps on a large diameter main? Leaving the gas company unprepared for an emergency seems a little dangerous. Now is the time to really look into modernizing the tapping fleet with a much lighter, user-friendly and safer machine that brings the operation into the 21st century.
Following the widespread acceptance of the ALH System-One tapping machine, with hundreds in service in the USA, PLCS offers the ALH System-Three tapping machine for Gas-Free* live mains tapping of 3", 4" and 5" NPT at pressures up to 60 psig. This is the only 21st century design specifically made for the gas distribution industry with push button drill and tapping operation on cast iron and steel mains. The ultra-lightweight modular aluminum components make it easy to be handled and mounted by one person without the need of lifting equipment and the inherent danger this involves. Double chains and spreaders mount the robust ALH System-Three tapping machine onto the control valve/drilling platform to ensure rock steady direct drilling and tapping. This avoids the need for expensive full encirclement fittings. The powerful air motor drives the NPT cup drill and tap without a pilot drill; dramatically shortening the time to cut and tap. The operation is safely completed by installing a PLCS Low-Profile plug for permanent leak-free seals.
The System-Three is so easy to use that crews will need minimal training to carry out the entire operation, including set up time, within 45 minutes. Given the System-Three's labor saving modern design, ease of use, short learning curve, light weight and overall safe operation isn't it time to revitalize your tapping operation? Unless of course you still drive that Model T. Ford.
