Exclusive! Margie Adam & Jewelle Gomez

From Margie: "I had such a blast getting the questions together in advance and then being able to fine-tune them in conversation with Jewelle. What I could not capture was the number of times we both burst out laughing - or one of us cracked the other up...Here we are, a couple of drama queens talking about things that really matter to both of us so much. What a joy and a pleasure."

LA is My Babe
I was in great need of a huge hug from my history, California, Chicanos, Mexicanos, familia and my mother's cooking. I wanted so badly to return to my homeland but I knew I couldn't go back to San Francisco; my friends had thrown me such a lavish going away party and I wasn't about to return the cool gifts. And I didn't want to live with my parents and sleep in their room in my baby crib... Read More

The First Gay Comedy Club

One day I noticed a flier on a telephone pole about a "Gay Comedy Night" at The Valencia Rose. I showed up that Monday in a red vintage dress. The room was full. I told my first gay joke which involved an old lady telling me, "It's good to see dykes wearing dresses again." They laughed and I got something I hadn't experienced from any audience till then; love. The Valencia Rose had the best audience a queer or queer-friendly comic could ever want.... Read More

Even when the mainstream academy and publishing world was giving her awards... and they gave many...she made them uncomfortable...They didn't trust her feminism or her lesbianism. Or her unswerving vision which gave her the ability to see through most institutional and philosophical pretense; that made the pretenders uncomfortable... Read More

Best of the Battle Axe
Dear Battleaxe,

My partner was recently diagnosed with restless leg syndrome and the medication her doctor prescribed to her is making her do kooky things. I'm somewhat mystified by her behavior... Read More

Will Epochalips Enhance Your Sex Life?

...Freedom for me comes in short glimpses of rising above it. I want so desperately to know what's next and to try to control it, imagine it, and make it happen in a certain way. I keep reminding myself that the more I try to manage and control-as in NOT trusting the Universe-the more I limit the possibilities...   Read More

Sober, Strong and Queer

This year, in Washington DC, there were hundreds of us - sober, strong, free and queer...1600 women. One of the featured speakers in Washington was a former nun. She shared her story and the fact that she is the only nun in America who had been convicted of 5 federal felonies during the course of her drinking (and religious) career.  Read More
