Yes Virginia, there is an Equality Clause
(With apologies to Virginia O'Hanlon and Francis P. Church, I have co-opted the "Dear Virginia" story from 1897. Its message reaches far and wide, with regard to beliefs and conviction of life's truth.) Dear Editor, I am 53 years old. I have lived my whole life thinking there is an Equality Clause. Many of my fellow citizens say there is no Equality Clause. My conscience says that if I see it in my heart, it is so. Please tell me the truth...Is there an Equality Clause? -Shawn McAndrew, United States Citizen... View entire story

Glazed and Confused
Having explained how I judge my precious donuts Battle Axe Tastin' and a Tellin' Part 1,
I decided to include the following places based on what I read about them and what was recommended to me. They are as follows: The Doughnut Plant in New York City, Dynamo Donuts in San Francisco, Randy's Donuts in Inglewood, CA (near LAX), Psycho Donuts in San Jose, Voodoo Donuts in Portland, and Rollen Donuts in Merced, CA. The Doughnut Plant is in a league of their own... |

Menopausal Madness
The bed is on fire. I am on fire. I am hot. My hair is dripping wet as if I've just stepped out of the shower. The bedclothes are a tangled mess around me. I kick them out of the way and fall into a fitful sleep only to awaken several hours later cold and shivering. The mattress, instead of being on fire now seems to be floating in a pool of sweat. I lay awake and count the hours until morning. Six. I toss, I turn. I count. 5 hours 45 minutes. I wonder if I should go to the gym. I wonder why I'm not in a relationship. I wonder what other people wonder about at night... View entire story

Helen of Sparta - A Lesbian?
Of course, there is Helen.
Helen of Troy. Helen of Sparta. Helen of the golden-hair and honey-voice. Helen of the swan-neck, the white arms, the silver-sandals. Helen of the terrible beauty. Helen of the thousand ships. Helen of the rosy dawn of history, six hundred years, more or less, before Sappho. That Helen...

More Sex and the Single Gal
Dear Battleaxe,
Do you think one can and should masturbate even into one's senior years? I mean - with a partner or without - can the urgency still be there?
Dear Inquisitive Senior... View entire story

The Breast: Friend or Foe?
Being genderqueer it pretty much goes without saying that my breasts are a huge problem for my psyche. I can appreciate the feminine qualities I possess, and I do like breasts, mine included; well the idea of them anyway...

Why Risk My Life on a Mountain?
In 1998, I had an epiphany. I was busy whining to my friends and to myself about how useless my life had been up to that point, and when you're in that place in your life sometimes it takes just the right word to change your life forever. By the end of 1998, I had climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and followed that with chairing the committee which raised the money to build the San Francisco LGBT Community Center. The few words a dear friend said to me was a question, "If you died tomorrow, what would you regret?... View entire story

Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls? What?
In 1975 when I first saw Ntozake Shange's choreopoem, "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf," there had never been anything like it before on stage. It changed both my personal life as a lesbian and my professional life as a writer. I heard, for the first time, reflected back to me the things I knew to be true: colored women are so undervalued in US culture that daily life can be toxic. It also answered a question that had been haunting me for a decade...
