Let Brandon Break Your Heart Open
My wife comes out of the shower with tears in her eyes. "He'll never know what it feels like to love, he never got the chance" I open my arms so she can curl into me and I hold her. This morning, over coffee, we read about Brandon Bitner's funeral. The 14-year-old high school freshman from rural Middleburg, Pennsylvania committed suicide by running into the path of a tractor trailer. He left a note that he wanted to draw attention to bullying... View entire story

Lesbian Birth Control?
Dear Battle Axe,
Do you think most people are honest about their weight on their driver's license or on any other official documents?-Weightless in Woodside
Dear Weightless,
I would say as honest as they are about anything else. For instance when you go for your annual physical, the doctor may ask how many pats of butter you use daily, how many drinks per week, or what kind of birth control you are using....View entire story

I See Orange People
I've always liked a girl in a uniform. Geena Davis in her WWII era baseball uniform in the film "League of Our Own"...delicious! My late, great Aunt Edith in her WAVES uniform...impressive! The women in "Animal Cops-Florida"...fun! When both the fire and the police chief in San Francisco were women I was in heaven; always hoping for a sighting. I know...I'm a feminist...anti-war, anti-militarism, etc. But I still find something erotic... View entire story

Coming out Story - Leaving Chico
Fall 1978, I'm 19 years old, a sophomore at Chico State University in Northern California. I'm an Art Major and I'm also enrolled in a Fiction Writing Course. I write in the first person as a man and talk about chicks I like to have sex with-foreshadowing.Academically, I'm thrilled. The work I'm creating is unique and it's getting recognized. But emotionally, I'm...oh what's the word...really fucked up. I'm inside my head-socially awkward. I don't feel right in my own body. I feel something is missing. But during this time of internal conflict-I have a boyfriend. He's a nice guy and he buys me groceries, pot and booze.....

Lesbian History - Dyke a Quarterly
Penny House and I had been best friends since we were four years old. It was 1975, we were in our mid-twenties, had just recently come out, and were ready to take on the world.
All over the United States Lesbians were getting together to make culture - music, theater, art, film, poetry and all kinds of media. In New York we were right in the thick of it and enjoying every minute. We decided that making Dyke A Quarterly would be our contribution.
DYKE was... View entire story

Are Doughnuts the New Cupcake?
I decided to take my knowledge and experience of life on a side route, a new venture called Tastin' and a Tellin'. That's right, it's a Battle Axe culinary review of some of my favorite foods. First up, donuts! Donuts are an American staple and in some ways you shouldn't mess with them. They have to be in their purist form. The reason I say that is because ...View entire story

Troubled Teens, Then and NowNational Coming Out Day is over this year, but homophobia is still ongoing. This week a 13-year-old kid hung himself in the schoolyard at the same middle school that I attended. I remember my days in middle school there and how I desperately tried to pretend that I was NOT achingly in love with my female teacher. Last week a 15 year old girl at my old high school hung herself. I remembered causing trouble in those halls...View entire story

What Happened to the Women's Movement?
Is this really what our generation had in mind when they marched in the streets, sat in doorways and rotundas, picketed and posted handbills - to have a generation of women who became politicians wanting to take away women's rights and destroy the economic and social equalities we've gained over the last 40 years?
I remember taking a course in college called Women...View entire story |
