Acclaimed Yale University anthropologist David Levinson, in a family violence study* he conducted that focused on battered women; found that in the ninety societies he studied, incidents of battering were practically nonexistent when women have economic independence and support from other women.

And that is what The Business of Me strives to offer women in need everywhere.

Greetings!

Spring is in the air!

The snow is melting making and soon flowers will bloom. As the flowers and foliage come alive so do we. It's a great time to reflect and renew the goals we have set for ourselves. Enjoy this time!

In this month's newsletter includes our affirmation of the month. Our affirmation is meant to center us so that we can reflect on the progress we have made in moving our lives forward.

This month's money saving tip is a  great website for anyone who likes to shop and loves to get cash back too.  Spring is a great time to clean out those closets and this site will help you replenish what you need and save money in the process.

In "What's New" I will talk about my exciting day attending "International Women's Day" in New York City on March 8, 2011.

In Nancy's Book Club I review Ervin Laszlo's "World Shift 2012". In this book, one of his many, he talks about the "global crisis" we face and how if we continue to do things the same old way "we had better fasten our seat belts because we are in for a rocky ride".

Our expert this month is Joyce Maio a tea educator and organizer of international projects in the arts. Joyce has written an article on "The Healing Powers of Tea". Joyce beautifully tells us why we should incorporate tea into our lives. In fact, after reading Joyce's article I have started drinking tea each evening as a way to relax before bedtime and I can tell you it works!

I wrote an article titled "The Business of Me - Working To Solve Domestic Violence Issues In The Workplace". The article outlines a solution to the problem of workplace violence. Please read it a pass it on to your networks.

And to all of you who so graciously support me and the work of The Business of Me, I am truly blessed and grateful!

Happy Spring!

 Warmest Regards

Nancy

The Business of Me - Working To Solve Domestic Violence Issues In The Workplace

Picture this - a well-dressed woman, a Wall Street executive, is working in her office. She is going about her day busy with meetings, talking to clients on the phone and responding to her mail. But this day, a day that began as any other ordinary day, didn't turn out to be ordinary at all. You see, that woman had recently left her abusive husband and was concerned that he would come to her office to harass her. She had informed building security and a picture of her husband was given to the security guards so that if he should appear he would not be allowed to enter the building. Well he did show up in the building lobby that day and wouldn't leave until the security guards called the police.

This woman never called the police during her 20 year marriage because she was more afraid of the retribution that would be exacted if the police took him away and later released him.

This is a successful executive working for a Fortune 500 company who had lived in fear for the twenty years of her marriage - and had never told anyone what she was going through until she finally left him.

This woman was me. I was one of millions of women who work in companies across the country who silently endure domestic violence and never say a word.

My "dark days" are long behind me and I have gone on to not only live a life independent of spousal abuse but to thrive.

When it was time for me to give back I wrote a program called "The Business of Me" to help survivors get out and stay out of abusive relationships.  The Business of Me changes women's lives by leading them to focus on - and plan for - their future.

The Business of Me forms what becomes a tightly-knit group of women who support one another throughout the program and well into the future. We call this "The Board of Directors" and it is supported by The Business of Me's SOCED system - a secure social networking technology that enables daily interaction amongst the group's members, the program moderator and The Business of Me personnel.

During six weekly 2-hour sessions the women are guided to deal with fear and destructive thinking and develop new ways of envisioning their lives; and they learn how to identify new opportunities in any aspect of their lives and how to think about pursuing and perfecting them.

The statistics are well known - at least 25% of all women will be victims of abuse during their lifetimes. A growing number of CEOs are saying it is time for corporate America to confront the issue head-on.  In fact according to an article in the November 2008 edition of Fortune Magazine (http://money.cnn.com/2008/11/18/news/Domestic_violence_morris.fortune/index.htm ) those same CEOs say domestic violence threatens workplace safety and, as an HR issue is more volatile and potentially more dangerous than drug addiction or alcoholism.

Domestic violence is not just a social problem - it abuses the bottom line of every corporation. Every company suffers from lost productivity, increased turnover and retraining costs, increased medical insurance costs, increased overall medical costs, increased security risks and legal liability. More, domestic violence affects morale and the overall well-being of companies as other employees fear for their own safety. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), domestic violence costs $8.3 billion annually. This includes medical care, mental health services and lost productivity.

The Business of Me helps corporations create a unique Corporate-Community partnership that helps women free themselves from the debilitating and costly effects of domestic violence. This helps corporations reduce costs; it empowers the corporation and the communities that these companies serve while increasing profits.

We do this by matching corporations with shelters and women's organizations in their community. The women in need in the corporations are informed of the program through flyers, placards, newsletters and other communications all prepared by The Business of Me. Not only do the women get the benefits of The Business of Me but are also offered a full range of services available to them at the shelters and women's organizations hosting the program.

The women from the corporation join already sheltered women and are formed into groups of up to 15 who then participate in a three phase program conducted by the shelter and The Business of Me personnel - thus creating a partnership that benefits the corporation and the community.

A corporation's investment in The Business of Me is an investment in the business of the corporation - it's about what's good for the corporation, its employees and their communities.

Then there's the human element - every corporation that provides The Business of Me as an EAP program positively impacts the lives of women in their organization. Those women, their employees, become more productive. Helping them end the abuse that has plagued their lives means less direct and indirect costs for the company and the employee - and they help make their community a better place to live!

Affirmation for the Month of March

Positive Affirmation
     I AM Focused!!

         I AM Focused!

We've been flooded lately with a tsunami (no pun intended) of bad news.

It seems that there is so much horror going on around the world and in our nation that it is sometimes really difficult to stay focused on what we need to do to continue to move our lives forward.

Pundits and politicians on both sides of the aisle seem to be screaming at us to the point it is not only exhausting but downright debilitating.

If we are to continue our personal momentum we need to shut them out of our lives.

The way I have shut them up is to begin each day with the affirmation "I AM focused".

This affirmation centers me on the things I need to do and allows me to shut down the noise.

"I AM focused."

News
The Business of Me logo 100pxMany of you know  how much I believe in the power of networking and it's networking that garnered me an invitation to speak at "International Women's Day" in New York City on March 8, 2011.

My attorney and friend Andrea Wolff in New York City met a woman at one of her networking groups. This woman, Jennifer Wilcov, has a radio show which features writers. Her show is called "Your Book is Your Hook". Andrea introduced us via email and Jennifer invited me on her show.

Jennifer Wilcov and I finally met during one of my trips to New York City and we became fast friends.
Jennifer is an incredible woman who has endured incredible trials and pain and has done so with grace and gratitude. I urge you to read her story (www.jenniferswilcov.com).

As it turned out Jennifer was the regional director for International Women's Day for the New York City area and invited me to speak and if that were not enough I received The International Women's Day Outstanding Service Award for The Business of Me.

So to Jennifer and all the wonderful women of the Women's Information Network, I thank you for the wonderful experience and I am humbled by the recognition.

The Healing Powers of Tea

by Joyce Maio

Today, everything leads our senses outward, away from ourselves. As our daily lives become more hectic, we are all looking for inner tranquility and joy. This serenity can only come from our heart where quietness, peace, love and wisdom can be cultivated.

How often have you enjoyed a cup of tea to warm up or soothe your cold? There are approaches we are more likely to stock up on various infusions. Those herbal infusions, like chamomile or spearmint, are not TEA. Only one plant, Camelia Sinensis- whether white, green or black- is genuine Tea.

Tea is the second most popular beverage in the world after water and is much more than just "a soothing" beverage.

Legend tells us that the tea plant was discovered more than 5000 years ago in China. An emperor who was also a medicine man took a nap on a breezy afternoon. The wind blew off some leaves from a nearby tree which fell in a cauldron of boiling water. When the emperor awoke and took a sip, he tasted the fragrance of the leaves. He enjoyed it so much that he kept drinking it. Tea had been discovered...

Along with the fragrance, the emperor found that the new tea leaves alleviated rashes, bug bites and arthritic pains as well as an upset stomach.

Later, in the Tang Dynasty (6180in) Buddhist monks discovered that tea helped them stay awake and prolonged their meditation. Tea became a drink of royalty and later became popular for everyone.

Unfortunately, the Boston Tea party in 1773 put an end to Tea commerce in the U.S. and Americans have mainly been drinking coffee since. Fortunately, the trend is changing as more and more people are becoming aware of the enduring benefits of tea.

One of the many benefits of tea is its healing, transformative power for appreciation and harmony.

It has three main elements: earth (the plant), water and fire. The simple practice of preparing a cup of tea from a selection of loose leaves (not the tea bag), heating the water, pouring it gently into a teapot, letting it brew and sipping it from a cup, is a process that brings you close to nature and can immerse you in the simple, humble aspects of daily living.

The way you drink your tea each day, the attitude you bring to your practice, will determine the changes you bring into your life.

Find the time daily - even ten minutes - to prepare your tea with attention, patience and reverence. Then sit, drink mindfully, become aware of the smell, the color, the taste. Be as one with tea and enjoy it fully.

The daily pause will help you calm your mind and center it on the present moment without drifting to the past or worrying about the future. As you become more present, you'll also become more sensitive to yourself. You'll change your entire outlook in amazing ways.

Let tea guide you to a more contemplative and joyful life.

"World Shift 2012" By Ervin Laszlo

World Shift 2012
From the first sentence of his book Ervin Laszlo grabs your attention when he states "The world we have created is not sustainable". He then goes on to say that we have entered into a state of "global emergency".
Yet he tells us this state of "global emergency" is not a cause for alarm - but a call to action.

He points out all the issues that have created this "global emergency" and that the climate crisis is just one of them.

We know about the financial crashes and economic changes that have beset us but there are also world poverty, inhuman living conditions, hunger, crime, terrorism, war, intolerance and the frustration all that brings.

All one needs to do is look at the news and see the  turmoil in the Mid-East, the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and the unrest within many states in the U.S. to find evidence of what Mr. Laszlo is talking about. We are in a crisis and, as Mr. Laszlo shows us, it will take a change in consciousness to get us out of it.

He describes what will happen if we continued to do "business as usual". He tells us that if business does not change then the economic gap between rich and poor will become worse and worse. Do we really want to live in a "have" and haves not" society?

Laszlo describes in detail what is happening while global climate change creates droughts and devastating storms. As it continues simply hundreds of millions people will be homeless and face starvation.

If we don't change the way we do business what we are seeing on the news each day is a walk in the park to what might happen if a new consciousness is not adopted.

Read Mr. Laszlo's book and do not be afraid unless you want to continue to do the same things the same old way....then be very afraid.

Shopping Tip for March
FatWallet.Com

This month I am going to introduce you to a great coupon and cash back site. The site is
http://www.fatwallet.com/

I love the name. www.fatwallet.com offers coupons and cash back (anywhere from 1% to 20% on purchases made via their site).

We all love bargains and we all like to get cash back and www.fatwallet.com does both.

Their best deals are sorted by category. Each day they list a special deal in each. So I usually review those first and find out what are the best deals of the day. The forum discussions are really lively and you can use them to determine if a "deal" is as good as it says it is.

The cash back and the forums are a great way to shop. So let the shopping begin!
