Greetings!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

In this month's newsletter we have our affirmation of the month which was written by my wonderful friend Rev. Dr. Janet Knox. For this month's money saving tip I have a great website for anyone who has "little people" in their lives. I hope you find it useful for your holiday shopping.

Also in "What's New" I have a personal comment regarding my views of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please be sure to read it and pass it on to your networks.

In Nancy's Book Club I review Matthew Syed's book "Bounce" where he explores what he refers to as "the science of success".

Our expert this month is Sonia Satra who is an expert speaker, certified life coach and actress. Sonia has written an article on how we can all have "Oscar Winning Interviews". I have already put Sonia's tips in practice and they work!

On October 27th I was invited to the White House to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I was thrilled to be there and delighted that the President has put financial independence for survivors of domestic violence on the national agenda. As important as that initiative is, is it really enough?

On November 8th I wrote a blog about what really needs to be done. I have included the blog post below. The title is "Financial Independence Is On The National Agenda - But Is It Enough?" In the post I examine why teaching "how to's" are not enough if we want to effect real change.  Please read it and pass it on to your networks.

And to all of you who have so graciously supported me this year I wish you and yours and wonderful and blessed Holiday Season ....see you next month.

Warmest Regards

Nancy

Financial Independence Is On The National Agenda - But Is It Enough?

On October 27th I was invited to the White House to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  I was honored and excited to be invited and curious about what the President would have to say.

There were three initiatives that were introduced by the President but the one that really got my attention was the importance of financial independence to help survivors create economic stability and thereby increase their likelihood of living apart from their abusers. Yeah for the administration for recognizing that financial literacy is a huge issue for survivors!

As I have been saying for a very long time economic abuse is a very real form of domestic abuse and must be "treated".  The recommendations put forth by the President are certainly progressive such as the new rules issued by HUD that ensure victims of domestic abuse will not be evicted just because they were victimized. According to Secretary Donovan said "No one should be afraid of losing their home if they report abuse". "The Obama Administration has strengthened the existing interim regulation to further protect victims and ensures that current or former victims of domestic violence will not be turned down from HUD programs." Great!

In addition to HUD's commitment the FDIC will make available their Money Smart financial literacy curriculum which is a "how to" program that can be used by organizations to teach the "how to's" of financial literacy.

Teaching "how to's" is important, in fact The Business of Me and other programs do teach the "how to's" of personal money management too. But if you are a woman who has been abused and in many cases suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome we need to couple the "how to's" with a way  to change her thinking from "I can't" to "I can and will" and "I am not afraid".  I know, I was one of those women and before I learned the "how to's" of personal money management I needed to address the fears of my own ability to not only manage money but also my life.

I recently had a conversation with Doug Bennett the author of "Life and Spirit in the Quantum Field" (http://dougbennettsquantumlife.com). Doug was interested in The Business of Me because it not only provided the "how to's" of financial literacy but The Business of Me program also provides the means to facilitate a change in behavior and build a community of women who have endured abusive relationships so that they can provide support to one another.

During our conversation Doug mentioned a book by Brian Klemmer titled "If How To's Were Enough-We Would All Be Skinny, Rich & Happy". Great title! I have not had a chance to read the book yet, but I will. I did read some of the reviews on Amazon and one reviewer had this to say "The core of his (Brian Klemmer) philosophy centers on the premise that 99% of the decisions we make we do NOT make... our paradigms (or subconscious belief systems) make those decisions for us. By discovering these paradigms, we are able to take control of our decision making and thus grow in our personal power."

The Business of Me recognizes that it is our "paradigms", our "internal belief system" that dictates the decisions we make in life - this includes money management. The Business of Me provides the tools to guide our participants to identify their "paradigms" and how to move past their "old paradigms" to create a self-sufficient life and money management is part of that.

So if we really want to get serious about helping survivors change their lives let help them change their thinking and The Business of Me can do that!

Affirmation for the Month of December
Positive Affirmation
I AM Accomplished!

         I AM Accomplished!

My wonderful friend the Rev. Dr.  Janet Knox who is a champion of  The Business of Me wrote this affirmation for us.  I offer this affirmation to you with love and blessings.....And yes we are all ACCOMPLISHED!

"There is action in knowing that a movement has taken place whether we see the physical or not.  There is an energy that moves me along when I live The Business of Me.  Its action opens me to the appreciation of who and what I am.  I live and I move in it."

"I AM accomplished."

News
The Business of Me logo 100px

The last couple of months have been a whirlwind of travel and activity for me. I visited a number of cities to talk about Domestic Violence Awareness Month. I was even invited to the White House to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month with President Obama, Vice President Biden and White House Advisor on Violence Against Women Lynn Rosenthal. I mentioned that visit in the Welcome.

I was also a guest speaker at the University of Rochester in New York at their conference titled "Interpersonal Violence: Bridging Research To Practice, A National Conference for Creative Dialogue and Collaborative Problem-Solving. I talked about my life and how The Business of Me can help women survivors of domestic violence create independent self-sufficient lives. I want  to thank Dr. Catherine Cerulli for inviting me to participant at this important conference.

I want to thank  the many wonderful news outlets  that have featured me on their radio programs and newspapers. I am truly grateful for the support. The list of news outlets follows a Special Comment about my views of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Personal Comment

Well, October is over and while it's great to have rallies, ceremonies and other events to make the public aware of the impact of domestic violence for the millions of women and children who are still enduring abuse, the battle extends well past October. Let us not forget that somewhere in our country approximately 150 women are abused every hour. And you may know her. She may be the woman in the office next to you; she may be the woman on the coffee line with you every morning or standing in line next to you in the grocery store. She might be your neighbor, your sister, your daughter or you! I know her - she was me.

Oscar Winning Interviews
by Sonia Satra

You got the interview, now what?

For most people, getting that interview appointment can trigger a variety of emotions from excitement and hope to dread and fear. As someone who has "auditioned/interviewed" for hundreds of acting jobs and now interviews with corporations as a speaker and coach, I can relate to them all.

I also found the skills and process that were so instrumental to my acting career are hugely beneficial to the interview process. In essence, the process consists of:  Preparation, Rehearsal, Performance, Encore and Job!

PREPARATION: Every performance needs a script and in this case you are not only the actor but the writer too. Start by answering 6 basic questions:

Who
? Write down and study the details about the company, learn about the company culture and know as much as possible about the person who is interviewing you.

What? What is the job objective and what do you have to offer.

Where
? The logistics often inform the style, mood, and characteristics that are unique to that particular company.

When? When an interview takes place can affect the energy level in the room.

Obstacles
?  Do you have the right experience? Have you been out of the workforce?

How
: How much do you believe it? My acting teacher always said, "It doesn't matter what you say it's how you say it - you can make reading from a dictionary interesting if you care enough." Research shows that people won't remember what you say; they will remember how they felt. Whenever possible weave a story, personal example, analogy, metaphor, something that will touch the interviewer's feelings in a real and authentic way.

REHEARSAL: "How do you get Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice." I truly believe it is the most underestimated and overlooked step. Practice a mock interview wearing your clothes, accessories and shoes. If you can rally a friend or relative to help great, if not tape the questions, so you can hear them being asked. Ideally, video your practice sessions and watch your body language- notice your hands and feet, body shifts, gestures, nervous movement, energy, facial expressions. If video is not an option, audiotape is extremely useful too, so you can hear your answers and identify which ones sound real and confident and where you hesitate or stumble.

Another powerful tip for rehearsing is to mix it up: try answering the questions as if you are explaining it to a child or motivating a crowd, do it in different accents, try it slowly and deliberately and then quickly with urgency, try any character that strikes your fancy. Don't be self conscious (I know you are thinking that), this is fun, really and it is also a fantastic exercise to get the answers into your body, make them fluid and find your inner CEO.

PERFORMANCE: It's show time! You have rehearsed, dressed and arrived on time. I always recommend doing some easy vocal warm ups while in transit. It's relaxing and helps you connect to your core. A few other tension relievers are shaking out your hands vigorously, smiling or finding things that make you laugh, deep breathing or focusing on your senses.

To tap your inner power, think of a time when you felt happy, confident and in control, how did you stand, feel, breath. Notice your body stance when you feel nervous or uncertain? Now concentrate and shift back into your confident body posture. That positive stance will trigger messages and chemicals to your brain and nervous system that will reignite and reinforce your self-confidence.

ENCORE: You were brilliant and they want you back for a second interview. I believe the trap is to try to do it exactly the same way. As an actor that was the kiss of death because nothing is ever exactly the same. Do what works, bring in something new and really listen to the interviewer - that will keep the nuances and authenticity alive.

JOB: Congratulations - you got it! You probably will have several interviews before you get the job and that is okay. Just keep practicing, stay positive and remember that powerful, successful and confident character is found within YOU!

In Matthew Syed's book "Bounce" he explores the question of whether talent is innate or a result of what he calls "purposeful training". To make his point Mr. Syed relates his own story of how he became a champion table tennis player.  He talks about how his parents, who never played table tennis, purchased a full-size tournament-specification table tennis table. Both he and his brother became enamored with the sport and spent hours practicing. Then he met a teacher who happened to be the U.K.'s top table tennis coach and took Mr. Syed under his wing and coached him. His coach even introduced to him to the only table tennis club that was open twenty-four hours and Mr. Syed could play whenever he wanted for hours on end.

Mr. Syed relates that research has shown that a minimum of ten years is required to reach world-class prominence in a field or sport. He certainly spent more than ten years honing his table tennis abilities, but so did Tiger Woods.  As the book points out "An analysis of the top nine golfers of the twentieth century showed that they won their first international competition at around twenty-five years of age, which was, on average, more than ten years after they started golfing. The same finding has been discovered in fields as diverse as mathematics, tennis, swimming, and long-distance running."

The lesson for me in what Mr. Syed writes is that success is not an accident. It comes from hard work and practice. As parents if we want our children to grow up to be successful we need to pay close attention to what interests them (not us) and help them nurture that avocation by providing the environment for them to succeed - and only then can avocation become a successful vocation.

Shopping Tip for December

EcoMom.com

This month I would like to introduce you to a website I love. The site is EcoMom (www.ecomom.com). And as many of you know I am not a mom but I am a proud "honorary grandma" to Lucas my partner's 16 month old grandson who is one of the delights of my life. If you are a mom, grandparent or even an "honorary grandparent" like me this is a site you will love too and here's why.

EcoMom (www.ecomom.com)  is a curated commerce site serving mom in all 3 of her roles -- as the person most responsible for taking care of her young family, as the "Chief Purchasing Officer" in her home, and as a woman with personal needs and interests.  Using Ecomom's proprietary criteria, they evaluate products first for safety -- making sure that there are no harmful ingredients of any kind.

EcoMom then puts these products to use because their team is largely comprised of people just like our customers and they want to make sure that everything they offer works well and is effective.

EcoMom also looks at price, which is often a major consideration when shopping.  They want to make sure that the products offered are priced fairly and competitively.  Everything offered is authentically good and safe to put in, on, and around your family.

EcoMom has an exceptional customer experience and are laser focused on providing great customer service.  In addition to products, they offer information on a variety of topics related to healthy living and healthy lifestyles for you and your family.  EcoMom has a growing selection of products and all orders over $50 come with free shipping.

Finally, I love EcoMom because it is easy on my eyes. The site does not bombard you with a kaleidoscope of flashing images. You can easily see the products and effortlessly navigate the site quickly to find what you want - a big plus for those of us who may be "young at heart" but do not have "young eyes".

I enjoy being part of the EcoMom community and I know you will too!
