Let's Talk About.....
Prostate Cancer
It is the cancer no one wants to talk about; but 1 in 6 men will get it. 33,720 American Men will die from it this year alone. It is second only to lung cancer for death in male cancer patients.
Yet more men will wear pink ribbons in October than will wear blue ribbons in September. Pink ribbons have raised awareness of breast cancer and saved lives. Men need to follow suit and have open conversations about prostate health.
Talk to men in your life about simple screenings that should begin at age 50. A PSA blood test and a digital rectal exam are the two best detection tools. If there is a strong family history or symptoms, these screenings should begin earlier.
When asked what the number one thing about prostate cancer health no one talks about, Jo our registered oncology nurse says, "Research is showing that obesity plays a larger role in prostate cancer than previously believed. Prostate cancer can be hormone driven and body fat changes hormone levels. All of the healthy tips you know for a healthy heart will also take care of your prostate. Control your cholesterol, blood pressure, weight and fat intake. Limit your sodium, tobacco and alcohol use."
These are all the same tips you have been told by your grandmother, your mother, your physicians and every television doctor for years. And they are all good for your heart AND for your prostate. If you are a prostate cancer survivor, these same rules of healthy living need to be followed for continued health. These healthy living concepts could prevent recurrence.
If you have had cancer in a different part of the body, you are not immune to prostate cancer. You need to have your screenings done regularly like everyone else.
Talk about prostate cancer.
