Greetings!

Feb 21, 2011

Thank you for your continued support of my newsletter. Writing for you has become one of my favorite tasks of the month, and I sincerely enjoy all the positive feedback I get from you.

I get many calls from prospective patients that were recommended to go see a holistic practitioner for chiropractic care and nutrition therapy.   Holistic is a word that is becoming very popular. Many people seek out holistic practitioners but don't understand what sets holistic practitioners apart from other practitioners.

I have to say the word can be a bit vague and sometimes not as concretely defined as other wellness buzzwords like organic, free range etc. I thought it would be interesting to share with you what a holistic practitioner does. In the last part of the newsletter, I am happy to share with the success a patient experienced from the treatment this type of service provides.

What is a Holistic Practitioner?
A holistic practitioner generally treats a person as a whole and doesn't separate their health into compartments.  They  believe stress, nutrition, lifestyle choices, exercise, genetics and many other factors contribute to a person's state of health and well- being.  Generally, a holistic practitioner believes that there is a strong connection between the mind and the body. Symptoms of any kind may be an imbalance of multiple factors.

Another important tenet held by a holistic practitioner is the belief in wellness and preventative care.  Specifically, as a holistic chiropractor and a nutritionist I stress the importance of treating the body before it gets to a place where it is in severe pain or a disease process has manifested. Many of my patients come into my office every year around the same time and are in severe pain. This may require 6 to 10 visits to get them out of pain and fully functioning again.

I try to relay the importance of maintenance care. It is not an easy thing to take care of ourselves when we are feeling well, but the philosophy of a holistic practitioner emphasizes the benefit of taking care of ourselves to stay well not to wait until we can't walk, turn our heads etc.. Pain is always the last thing to show up after the body has tried to alleviate stress on its own.  If a patient were to choose a maintenance and wellness regimen of care they would be more likely to avoid entering a state of "code red", in which they would have to deal with getting out of severe pain.

As a holistic nutritionist I believe that the human body needs a particular balance of the right vitamins, minerals,  proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and other nutrients to help the body heal itself and to reach overall physical, emotional, and mental health.  Natural whole foods are an important part of holistic nutrition.  Unprocessed foods provide the body with essential enzymes for digestion and nutrient absorption.  It is so important to get a diversity of vegetables, fruits, organic or natural meats, unprocessed grains, and good fats.

Unfortunately, the average person doesn't meet their dietary needs through their food intake.  If a person is lacking energy, fatigued, anxiety ridden , gets colds and flus, has digestive issues or other symptoms,  it usually means that their healthy diet alone is not enough and they require vitamins, herbs, or supplements to achieve a state of optimal health.

The vitamins, supplements, and herbs that I use in my practice are based on the whole food philosophy. This means that they are taken from real food and put into supplement form. Vitamins and minerals work synergistically, so when you take part of a vitamin or food and separate its parts, often times the desired nutrient effect is lost.  There is a reason that foods were created a certain way, and nature knows best.

Most vitamins and supplements that are being sold today are synthetic and manufactured in a lab.  They are not assimilated into the body and are not doing what they claim to be doing.  A good example is vitamin C. Most vitamin C products out there consist of ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is an active ingredient, but together with all its co-factors is how vitamin C works best in the human body.

The nutrition response testing technique that I use is a holistic approach to healing the body. This specialized muscle testing technique identifies underlying imbalances on the cellular level.  A patient may present with digestive symptoms, fatigue, headaches, or any other symptoms. I never make a judgment call on any symptom.  A symptom can be the result of an imbalance of any system, organ, and gland in the body. The body is dynamic and interconnected.

Last month, a patient came in for a holistic physical as a result of a recent newsletter.  I found she may of had high blood pressure as a result of a kidney, liver, blood sugar, adrenal gland, or another organ imbalance. It may be a reaction to a particular food intolerance. I had a patient that was sensitive to white rice and until I told her that she had this sensitivity, she was eating it three times per week.

A week after cutting the white rice out of her diet, her blood pressure decreased by 20 points systolic and 12 points diastolic. Her increased blood pressure was the body's pro-inflammatory reaction to being bombarded by a substance that wasn't good for her multiple times per week.

The sum of a person is greater than its parts, and this is why I see each patient as whole-istic!

Healthfully yours,
