Unpacking After Your Move
It's move day, the furniture is in place, electricity is on, and you are surrounded by boxes everywhere. Now what? Where do you start? How do you begin? Hopefully you have the help of friends or family or better yet, you have hired a Professional Organizer. Get a plan and share it with others. Think about which closet will have your clothes, what side of the sink will be yours and what side will be your spouse. Where are the plugs for the hair dryer? What boxes of items will go into the garage or laundry room? Planning will help to minimize last minute decisions on move day which helps manage the stress.
Decide on which room(s) to attack first. Although kitchens are great to get in order immediately, sometimes knowing where your clothes or your bed linens are will better serve you for resting that night and getting ready for work the next day. You will get more done by staying focused on one space.
Give your helpers an assignment. Ask one person to unpack all your wardrobe boxes and show them where to hang the clothes. This will allow you to empty those large boxes fast and make space to move around easier. Another task is to ask someone to break-down all those empty boxes and lay them flat either outside or in the garage. Store your packing paper in the large wardrobe boxes to start, then use regular boxes.
Sort contents of a box as you unpack. Back to the ABC's of organizing - sort like items together as you unwrap. Put all coffee related things in one section of the counter, all baking items together, etc. You will save time by grouping things immediately instead of placing them all over. It will also be easier to place and organize them when you know how much of one thing you have. Put all decorating items in one safe corner of the home to decide on later.
Getting all items out of the boxes will help you to see what you have and how best to place them in your new space. Before you know it, it will look like Home Sweet Home. Enjoy your new space! |
