About NSHS

On May 13th Channel 8 News  featured the NSHS program in "What's Cool in School".

Check the video out here.

"I want to thank NSHS for giving me the opportunity to excel further in life. I learned how to socially integrate into college which has given me the ability to take on major group projects in engineering. Without the support I recieved from the amazing faculty of NSHS I would've never been able to obtain the experience that I am gaining now."

Nevada State High School Students Learn Importance of Community Through Service Hours
Students to complete 30 hours of required community service each semester

NSHS student's and Dr. Hawk volunteering at
CT Sewell Elementary School

For high school students, life is often centered around academics, sports, school dances and friends. But for students at Nevada State High School, those things aren't the only items on students' agendas.

That's because NSHS places an emphasis on giving back to the community.  NSHS students are required to fulfill 30 hours of community service each semester, or 60 hours each academic year, as part of their grade for the school's study skills course.

"Volunteering was first brought to the school by students and parents who were concerned about building strong resumes for college and careers," said Dr. Wendi Hawk, principal of NSHS.   "The school embraced the idea, and students have found that it is a great opportunity to give back to the community that supports them, while allowing them to gain valuable skills and experiences."

Students are given the opportunity to volunteer anywhere in Clark County. They can seek out projects on their own or take advantage of volunteer programs linked to the school. Nonprofit organizations can also submit information for consideration.

NSHS Prepares Students for Life After College
Mock interviews give students a chance to hone in on interviewing skills for college admissions and careers

At a high school where college courses are a standard part of the curriculum, it's only natural for the students to be well-prepared for job interviews and life after college. Last month Nevada State High School conducted mock job interviews for students to help them improve and develop their interviewing skills.

APPLY NOWStudents were interviewed by individuals and business professionals who were familiar with the interview process. These interviews were conducted to not only help students succeed in the professional world, but to provide them with experiences that will help them prepare for scholarships and college admissions.

"Our students and other applicants are missing job opportunities because of weak interviewing techniques" said Dr. John Hawk, executive director for Nevada State High School. "As a school we are dedicated to preparing our students for college and 'real life' experiences by teaching them strong interviewing techniques."

Students met with the mock interviewers for around 15 - 20 minutes, the same length as a typical interview. After the interview the mock interviewer filled out an evaluation form rating how well a student performed during the interview. Students were rated on everything from body language to the substance of their answers and follow-up questions.

Natalie Gamez, a junior at NSHS, said "Before going through the mock interview process, I was really nervous about what my first interview would be like, but now having gone through a trial run I'm very confident about going into an actual job interview."

Over 20 business professionals volunteered, coming from businesses such as The City of Henderson and The Southwest Gas Corporation.

Meet a NSHS Student: Jeremy Francisco

APPLY NOW

At the end of his junior year, Jeremy Francisco was searching for something more out of his high school experience. After doing some research on the internet, he came across Nevada State High School. Ready for a challenge and a change, he applied for the program his junior year. Read below as Jeremey tells us about his experience as a first year senior at NSHS.

Q: HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT NSHS?
A: I heard about Nevada State High School (NSHS) during the last quarter of my junior year. After experiencing various disappointments with my previous high school, I looked for another school that was still as academically demanding and achievement-oriented as the high school that I was accustomed to. Hearing about the chance to jump-start your academic career by taking college courses while still in high school certainly piqued my interest. NSHS came up in an online search as a high school offering a dual credit program. This meant only one set of classes that would count for both high school and college credit. Not only that, but there were no book fees or tuition fees, unlike other programs I had come across. The choice practically made itself.

Q: WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF BEING A STUDENT AT NSHS?

A: The best part of Nevada State High School is the scheduling freedom. Each semester, you are given the opportunity to pick the days and times of your college classes. Any time, from early in the morning to late at night, are available to you, as well as online college classes. This gives students the ability to still be active in their sports and other extracurriculars.

Q: HOW HAS NSHS PREPARED YOU FOR COLLEGE?
A: Nevada State has significantly prepared me by giving me firsthand experience at an actual college that I will continue to attend after graduating high school. I have learned how to interact properly with my professors, and I completely understand what is expected of me both academically and socially. The collegiate experience that I have gained is priceless, especially since I have not yet acquired a high school diploma.

Q: WHAT WOULD YOU TELL A FRIEND THAT IS CONSIDERING ATTENDING NSHS?

A: I would tell anyone that is considering attending NSHS that it is completely worth it. All too often, my own generation of classmates underestimates the importance of a college education. One reason for this is the financial burden of continuing your education. By attending Nevada State High School, you can attend up to two full years of college without having to pay for tuition and books. This type of opportunity is once-in-a-lifetime, and can be ultimately life changing.

Q: ONCE YOUR EDUCATION IS COMPLETED WHAT OCCUPATION DO YOU PLAN TO PURSUE?

A: Upon completing my double major (Applied Science Associates Degrees in Paramedic Medicine and Fire Science Technology) at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), I plan to further my education by transferring to Nevada State College to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Fire Science. I would like to pursue a career as an EMT or Paramedic for the Clark County Fire Department.
