Greetings!

This month's greeting is written by Tony Raymer, University of Iowa practicum student, who joined CYC for the summer.

This summer, I have spent in my foundation practicum for the University of Iowa School of Social Work with Community!Youth Concepts. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with CYC and have learned a lot.

CYC has provided me an opportunity to learn how a grant-funded agency is run and how it seeks its funding, something that I don't do in my full-time work. I have been able to learn the grant writing process and try my hand at it several times. CYC has also given me an opportunity to learn about and implement service learning projects and strategies throughout the summer, especially through the Urbandale Movin' On Up Transition Program.
CYC is a unique agency in the metro area, one of the only agencies that has been able to see and apply the value of service learning with youth in many settings. It has been great to be able to see CYC shout from the rooftops the importance of service learning for youth, adults, and our community.

Happy Labor Day and start of the school year!

Sincerely,
Amy, Julie, Danny, Amelia, and Michelle

2011 Sidewalk Chalk Flood a Success!

On August 20, CYC hosted 400 youth, families, and community members at the second annual Sidewalk Chalk Flood in Western Gateway Park. To see pictures from the event, click here. Thank you to Casey's and Arctic Glacier Ice for their respective donations of pizza and ice! Thanks, also, to a wonderful group of volunteers who helped to make it happen.

Have You Read Our Blog?

Community! Youth Concepts has a blog! Creating Community Kids is a blog created to help connect families, youth, schools and the community.  Parents and other adults involved in youth's lives can expect to find ideas for engaging with their youth, activities that are fun for the family, tips on connecting with the community and ideas for giving back. We will also highlight Iowa youth and opportunities for families in the area.  It is our hope that even if you are not from our corner of the world - that the ideas and inspirations that you see here, will help you Create Community Kids, wherever you are!

Make a Difference... Be a Mentor!

What inspired you to find a career you love? Be that inspiration for youth! CYC's Youth Mentoring Program builds relationships between
youth ages 12-17 (with an emphasis on high school) and professionals to improve life skills, provide career awareness, and improve academics by connecting the classroom to real life. Mentors and mentees are matched based on personality and career interest. The intent is to introduce mentees to the mentor's career, exposing the mentee to a behind-the-scenes look at how educational concepts are applied in a real-world setting. Mentors must be 18, 5 years older than their mentee, and make a commitment of 4 hours a month for 9 months. For more information, or to be a mentor (or mentee!) contact Michelle at 243-4292 or by email at [email protected].

Help us name the program! If you have a name suggestion for CYC's Youth Mentoring Program, email it to Michelle!
