Greetings!

This month's greeting is written by Sheyenne Manning, a Simpson College student who has been job shadowing at CYC.

As a second-year journalism student from a small town in Iowa, there are a lot of things I have yet to experience. Fortunately, I have the chance to gain valuable experiences through classes offered by my college during a short semester called Mayterm. Mayterm is a three-week semester that allows students to take a single class everyday to fulfill a requirement of their major or minor. It's often the time students travel to other countries to have incredible, life-changing experiences or travel to other states and do charity work that will change others' lives. At this point in my life, however, I'm only thinking about what possibilities are open for life after college. So this Mayterm, I chose to do a three-week job shadow at Community! Youth Concepts under Danny Heggen.

What I hoped to gain from shadowing Danny and his coworkers was simple: I wanted to know if helping people accomplish their goals was really as fulfilling as it seemed. And, well, it sure is. Even my short time with CYC has been enough for me to become aware of the issues facing young people, and more importantly, how I can use my skills to empower them. I've learned that if adults are expected to lead productive lives and participate in their community, the participation must start from an early age. Even I feel more empowered by the things the CYC team believes are possible. I've gained invaluable experience from my time with Danny and Community! Youth Concepts, and I'm now sure I'll always want to be doing something to help people.

Thanks to Sheyenne and her dedication to helping others!

Sincerely,
Amy, Julie, Danny, and Amelia

Cowles Collectors to benefit Furry Friends Refuge

The Cowles Collectors, a group of fifth grade students from Cowles Montessori, are working on their third service project - a collection of kitty litter and animal food for the Furry Friends Refuge, a no-kill shelter that helps animals in need. As part of their project, the Cowles Collectors built and decorated cardboard dog houses to hold donations. If you're interested in donating to their cause, feel free to drop off supplies at the CYC office, and we will get them to the right place. The Cowles Collectors will be seeking donations through May 25 and will resume their service club during the next school year.

Ashley Scheidel

Katie Seda

Shea Barden

Brent Robins

Do you need volunteers?

Do you work for a local nonprofit that needs volunteers in August? Incoming freshmen to Drake University will be required to complete volunteer service hours as part of their orientation prior to school. Students planning the service hours are looking for opportunities at local nonprofits, particularly within walking distance of Drake. For more information, contact Robin Sautter at [email protected].

CYC welcomes Tony!

In early May, CYC welcomed Tony Raymer, who is student completing his MSW practicum with the organization. Tony has a degree in Psychology and Religion from Wartburg College and experience in community based services with children primarily diagnosed with mental illness. At CYC, Tony will be contributing to projects in mentoring, youth development, grant writing, and assessment.

CYC can help your groups of youth ages 12-24 create their idea and implement it, either through service-learning opportunities or through a Youth Venture.  Contact us for more information.
