Greetings!
As we spot robins and the snow shifts to rain, we have hope that spring is near. We are in the midst of planning for community gardens and will be planting seeds soon. We hope that this is a time of renewed energy for you, too. Whether it's getting outside to take a walk, going for a bike ride, or planting seeds in your own garden, find something that helps you enjoy spring!

Sincerely,
Amy, Julie, Danny, Amelia, and Jennie

CYC needs volunteers for food pantry recipe boxes

Community!Youth Concepts and DMARC, in partnership with Des Moines Public Schools, have created recipe boxes for the families who use the DMARC food pantries. These boxes feature ten index cards with bilingual messages that connect success in school and healthy behaviors.  CYC and DMARC are looking for 20 volunteers on April 1 between 9-12 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.,  and April 2 from 9-12 a.m. to collate the 8,500 boxes and corresponding index cards.  Other times are available as needed.  To volunteer, please contact CYC at 243.4292 or [email protected].

CYC programs highlighted in the news

Recently, two CYC Youth Venture programs were highlighted in the news. Flipped, an East High School project that involved students redesigning and modifying donated prom dresses to sell at a low cost to other students, was highlighted on Channel 5 News.

Another Youth Venture, Battle the Cavities, was highlighted in the Des Moines Register. They presented to Moulton students on the importance of dental hygiene. See the article and pictures here. Congratulations to these two teams doing fantastic work!

CYC recruits youth with disabilities for the ID Action Youth Advisory Board

CYC coordinates the work of the ID Action Youth Advisory Board, a group of youth ages 16-22 who have a developmental disability. We are currently recruiting members for the ID Action Youth Advisory Board. Youth meet twice per month for social and civic engagement events. If you or someone you know is interested, email Amelia or call 243.4292.

CYC partner CULTUREALL recruits youth for summer Fast Track Diplomats Program

Fast-Track Diplomats takes a hands-on, experiential and student-directed approach to exploring culture, leadership and service learning.  The youth begin to uncover their skills, talents and passion at the Summer Academy.  During the week, students connect with community leaders and Cultural Ambassadors who represent more than 30 cultures.  Together they identify cultural issues in their school or communities and research ways to improve them. Additionally, youth participate in a service-learning project through the partnership of CYC.  The students leave the academy with the skills and knowledge they need to implement their plans.  Throughout the year, students are supported by CULTUREALL™ and its allies.

If you or someone you know is interested, you can attend an informational meeting on Saturday, March 19 from 10:00 - 11:30 a.m. or Tuesday, March 29 from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m at the Urbandale Public Library in Room B. For more information, contact Nikola at [email protected] or visit http://www.cultureall.org/.

CYC welcomes Jennie

CYC recently welcomed Jennie Groves to the team as the KWAKERS Founder and Coordinator. Jennie has more than thirty years of experience working with children and youth as an educator, mentor, child advocate, and volunteer.  She is the founder and coordinator of a community- and school-based service learning program called Kids With A Kause (KWAKERS).  A former middle school teacher at a non-traditional school in Vermont, Jennie has implemented programs in the classroom that revolve around fitness, environmental issues, and community service.

CYC can help your groups of youth ages 12-24 create their idea and implement it, either through service-learning opportunities or through a Youth Venture.  Contact us for more information.
