Greetings!
As we start a new year in the middle of an economic recession, we have noticed greater numbers of youth who are interested in service to their communities. Young people see individuals in need around them and are eager to help - through growing food in community gardens, collecting stories from refugees to share, and purchasing technology for cash-strapped schools. It is our hope that they continue to inspire you each day.
Sincerely,
Amy, Julie, Danny, and Amelia

CYC conducts forums and recruits members for the ID Action Youth Advisory Board

Recently, CYC conducted community forums to gain feedback on barriers and strategies to engaging youth with disabilities in civic participation. The ideas brainstormed will be implemented through the work of the ID Action Youth Advisory Board, a group of youth ages 16-22 who have a developmental disability.

We are currently recruiting members for the ID Action Youth Advisory Board. Youth meet monthly for social and civic engagement events. If you or someone you know is interested, email Amelia or call 515-243-4292.

CYC helps students kick off five new Youth Venture Projects

CYC helped five new Youth Venture teams start their service projects, which include:

East High TOA (The Organization of Acceptance) - Students with TOA are creating a safe place for youth from their school to be and counter every type of social injustice.

East High Culture Clash - Students are generating awareness and celebrating diversity through a cultural activities day.

East High Flipped - A group of youth are taking donated prom dresses and using sewing and design skills to rework and sell them to girls at a low rate.

Mitchell STEPS - Older students with developmental disabilities are serving as friends and mentors to younger students at Mitchell Elementary.

Johnston High Global PerspectiveS (GPS) - Youth are collecting stories of life travel journeys to share during social events and through media formats.

CYC starts Environmental Challenge to begin beautification, restoration, and conservation projects

With funding from Metro Waste Authority, CYC kicks off a Youth Venture Challenge called Environmental Challenge. CYC is looking for up to seven groups of high school or college youth, as well as adults interested in guiding youth, to take on projects for beautification, restoration, and conservation. Projects may vary from river clean ups to community gardens to any idea that makes our environment a cleaner, safer, or prettier place to live.

Teams will receive $500 for their projects, with an opportunity to be granted additional resources. If you or someone you know is interested in being part of a project, email Danny or call at 515-243-4292.

21st Century Community Learning Center Grant Opportunity

Applications are now being taken for 21st Century Community Learning Center (21CCLC) grants. Approximately $4 million in grant funds this year have been set aside to fund new programs across the state.

The intent of the 21st CCLC funds is to enable communities to design and implement effective out-of-school programs that will result in improved student achievement, and be enhanced by and sustained through community partnerships beyond the term of the grant.

Letters of Intent to apply are due to the Iowa Department of Education by February 10, 2011. Notifications of intent to apply are required to submit an application. However, submitting a letter of intent does not obligate you to apply for a grant. Send all notifications of intent to apply to Ruth Jones at [email protected].

Applications are due March 4, 2011 via www.iowagrants.gov. If you have any questions on the grant application please feel free to contact Chris Fenster, 21CCLC Program Manager, at [email protected] or 515-326-5350.

CYC welcomes Rebecca and Amelia

In January, CYC welcomed Rebecca Hoefer, a University of Iowa MSW practicum student. Rebecca will be focusing on assisting Youth Venture teams and learning about program quality. She has a background in residential treatment and social work.

In February, CYC added Amelia Colwell Reedy to staff as the Director of Youth Programming. Amelia will be working to expand the ID Action Youth Advisory Board and Youth Venture program. She comes to CYC with a background in public policy and human services.
