Q. How did you find out about Mary's Shelter?

I was referred from the Hope House, which is where I had been living.

Q. Are there things about living here that you find difficult?

No, not at all!

Q.  Tell me a little about your other children.

Well, I have three children.  The oldest is a boy, Demetrius.  He is six years old and lives with his father.  Then there is my daughter, Iyana, who is four years old and lives with my Godmother.  Then there is Daniel, the youngest.  He stays with me at Mary's Shelter.

Q.  Did you ever consider having an abortion during this pregnancy?

Yes.

Q.  Have you ever had an abortion in the past?

Yes.

Q. What are some of the greatest challenges you have faced?

Being separated from my children, and going to college!

Q.  What aspects of your life are trying to change?

All of them.

Q.  What goals do you have for yourself?

To get a nursing degree and find a great job in that field.  Then I would like to get my own apartment and my own car.

Q.  What place does God have in your life?

FIRST PLACE, as always.  I love God, and He loves me.

Greetings!

September was an unusually quiet month, an unexpected respite after the craziness of preparing for the Summer Soirée.  With the beginning of Fall, however, we are experiencing a change of season in more ways than one.   Our two oldest residents, both over 30 years old,  have moved on, and two new, very young women have taken their place.  By Christmas, God willing, there will be two new babies at Mary's Shelter.  We are blessed to play a small part in the life of each child born here.   In the midst of everything, each child brings so much joy, reminding us about the heart of our mission.  Thank you all for supporting this ministry.  Our mothers, children and babies have been so blessed because of you.

God bless you!

Kathleen Wilson, Director

There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of the work. This is where the respect and the love and the devotion come in - that we do it to God, to Christ, and that's why we try to do it as beautifully as possible.

- Mother Teresa

Resident Profiles

The following are profiles of some of our current residents.  All names are fictitious.

MARIA:  In September, we said goodbye to our long-term resident and her two adorable children, Teijonand Miss T.  Maria had a remarkable turn-around from the time she entered our shelter as a depressed, unemployed outcast from Hope House.  She had many obstacles, including DUI classes, multiple fines, and terrible credit.  Slowly but surely, she pulled herself from the abyss, paid her fines, served her time, found a job, and earned back some of the self-respect she had lost.  The baby she would have aborted if she had had the money is now his mother's and sister's greatest joy.  He is also our Mary's Shelter Mascot!  We will all really miss her children, who brought such light and happiness to our shelter.  We wish Maria well and want her to know that we will continue praying for her success.

P
AULINA: Paulina has been having a difficult time with some of her classes at Germanna.  Her knowledge of mathematics is so limited that even the remedial math classes are too challenging.  She was embarrassed to ask for help in class, and she received a very poor mark on her first test.  Fortunately, a new volunteer and veteran home-schooling mother, Karen, offered to help tutor her.  Karen and Paulina have been meeting regularly, and Paulina is very encouraged by the results.  She said Karen has been able to explain math concepts in a way that finally makes sense to her, and she feels confident that, with Karen's help, she can pass her classes!

ISABEL:  Isabel surprised everyone by moving out very suddenly last week.  We fear she may come to regret this hasty decision, but hope for the best.  Please keep her and her baby, Landyn, in your prayers!

CATHERINE:  Catherine is working at three different jobs and attending college full-time.  We are amazed that she finds time to tuck her kids into bed at night!  Although we are proud of her efforts, the truth is that Catherine has perhaps taken on too much too soon.  Because of her learning disabilities, school is a real struggle, and because of her seizure disorder, her driver's license is suspended.  She spends so much money getting to and from work that, at the end of the day, she sees very little of her paycheck.  We fear she may burn-out from her crazy schedule, and that her grades will suffer.  Please pray that Catherine would make wise choices for herself and her three children.

MONICA:  Monica recently discovered that she has to have a kidney removed.  She was suffering from kidney failure during her pregnancy which is why she was induced early.  As if life weren't hard enough for this full-time student and working mother!  In addition to her physical ailments, Monica also struggles with a mental illness.  Recently, her medication was not working properly and she experienced a rather disturbing episode.  Her medication has since been adjusted, but we are all a little wary of a repeat occurrence.  Please pray for her!

In addition to the moms you have read about, Mary's Shelter provides homes to other mothers and children.  Please keep them ALL in your prayers.

Volunteer Corner

sharonAn Interview with Sharon Hale

Q: What sort of volunteer work do you do for Mary's Shelter?
I transport ladies to and from work, run errands, go to doctor appointments, etc.

Q: How did you first get involved with Mary's Shelter and begin volunteering?
I read an article in the Free Lance Star regarding how Mary's Shelter helped a young woman and her child.

Q: How do you find time to volunteer?
I can help out Monday through Friday before work, during lunch, after work and on Saturdays.

Q: What is the best part of volunteering at Mary's Shelter? What have you learned from your volunteer experience?
It's truly God's work in action.  During my interaction with the ladies, I learn that each of their experiences are individual & unique.  I learn not to judge them based on their experiences before entering Mary's Shelter and not to judge them if they choose to leave before "We" think they are ready.

Q. What do you feel you have to offer to the residents at Mary's Shelter?
My time, my ear, and hope for a brighter future for them and their children.

Q: What would you recommend for others who want to get more involved in Mary's Shelter through volunteer work?
Call, email or write to Mary's Shelter. If you don't know what or know how you may be able to help, just ask, "How can I help"?

Q: What is the best thing about Mary's Shelter?
Mary's Shelter enriches the lives of the ladies and children living there by offering hope and support and an opportunity to learn important life skills .

Our Knitting Class Needs Donations!

tayani knittingPlease consider a donation of knitting needles or yarn for our semi-monthly knitting classes.  If you are interested in making a donation of supplies, or would like to know what is specifically needed, please contact Ginny Foreman at ginnysheller@gmail.com

Thank You!

*Thank you to the St. Matthew's Knights of Columbus, Diane Kelly, Danya Ivory, and everyone who donated delicious cakes for the Cake Walk at the St. Matthew's Parish Picnic.  With the money raised from the Cake Walk, Mary's Shelter will be able to purchase, among other things, a sorely needed filing cabinet for our office and a refrigerator for our new intern!

*Thank you to Vicky Sampson for a lesson in beef stew and corn bread at our monthly cooking class!

*Thanks also to Ginny Foreman and Barb Frasher for their help at our semi-monthly knitting classes.

*A very special thanks to Eddie and Ed O'Brien, Augie and Tom Valentour, Aaron and Pete Lockard, Alec Morin, and Nick Doyle, all members of Boy Scout Troop #835.  Eddie O'Brien raised money for two wooden playhouses and gathered together this great group of young men, who then assembled both playhouses in one day.  Eddie invested over 100 hours of work into his Eagle Scout project, and we are extremely grateful.  Thank you for this wonderful gift!

A Final Thank You

We are very grateful to the wonderful volunteers, prayer warriors, and donors who are crucial to the survival of Mary's Shelter. Through your ongoing support, we pray that this ministry will continue to foster a culture of life in our community for many years to come.

We hope you will continuing praying for the success of our  2010 "Fulfill the Promise" Campaign. With your help, we have really come a long way this year, but we still have many obstacles ahead of us.  Please help us by spreading the word!

For more information about our ongoing "Fulfill the Promise" Campaign, please visit our website at www.marysshelterva.org.
