Meet Bernadette

Q: Where were you living before you came to Mary's Shelter?

In and out of hotels, the homeless shelter, then staying with a friend who was housing 13 people in a townhouse.

Q: What was your reaction when you discovered your pregnancy?

At first, I was worried about what kind of life I could give this child, since I was not living anywhere stable and was working dead-end jobs.  But at the same time I was happy that my daughter would have a sibling.  My boyfriend was really supportive and led me to believe we would get through it together.  Then he left, and I was on my own.

Q: How did you find Mary's Shelter?

Through Bethany Christian Services.  I was desperate for help and at that point considering adoption.  I thought maybe Bethany could help me get the resources I needed and point me in the right direction.  They told me about Mary's Shelter and I can honestly tell you it was an answer to prayer.

Q: How has living at Mary's Shelter helped you?

I have been able to get a pretty steady job, complete my GED, get the resources that I need.  Being here is giving me the opportunity to take a CNA (certified nurse assistant) class at Career Training Solutions.  And of course, it has been a blessing to have a roof over my head!

Q: What are your goals?

To get into the medical field, to be able to support my children and myself, and to live a happy and healthy life.  I would like the chance to give back to this shelter someday, to help others as I have been helped.

Q: What have you learned from this experience?

That there is light at the end of the tunnel!   It doesn't matter how far down you have gone into the hole, there's always a way out if you are willing to climb.

Q: What would you tell others about Mary's Shelter?

The women who run this shelter, all the donors,  and the volunteers are truly angels of God.  I have been so blessed to have found such a wonderful place.

Greetings and a Special Note of Thanks

We have had an exciting, action-packed month at Mary's Shelter.  Our new home, with its immense space, has inspired us with wonderful ideas and plans for our program.  We are blessed to have a truly great group of women to work with!  They are excited about the growth of our program, which is very encouraging!

We have also been encouraged by the response to our "Fulfill the Promise" Campaign.  With the addition of our new house, we are able to house more women, which equals a need for more money.  We have always had faith that our needs would be met, and because of a few generous churches and many generous individual donors like you, they always have been.

However, we were blown away by the amazing generosity of St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Spotsylvania, VA.  In addition to their regular monthly donation, St. Matthew's gave Mary's Shelter

$12,000.00

You can imagine our astonishment, joy, exhilaration, and relief!

Thank you St. Matthew's!!

We are encouraged by this incredible show of support to continue our campaign to reach 1000 donors.  We hope you are encouraged as well to become a supporter of our ministry.   Please become 1 of 1000 to help fulfill the promise we have made to our residents, so that they, in turn, can fulfill their own great promise.

For more information about our "Fulfill the Promise Campaign", please visit our website at www.marysshelterva.org, or simply press the button below.

"Why did you suffer for me, dear Jesus? For love! The nails...the crown...the cross...all for the love of me! For You I sacrifice everything willingly.  I offer You my body with all of its weakness, and my soul with all its love."

Thank you and God Bless!

AGNES:
Congratulations to our most recent resident, Agnes,
on the birth of her baby girl, Leanne.  Baby Leanne surprised everyone by coming 5 weeks early and poor Agnes had to endure an emergency c-section.  Both are recovering well from Leanne's dramatic entrance.

GIANNA:  Gianna and baby Lily Grace  moved back to New York a few weeks ago.  She plans on finishing school while her mom helps care for her baby.  She hopes that before long, she will have a place of her own.  Please keep Gianna in your prayers, and pray that she would hold fast to her newly-resurrected faith.

CATHERINE:  Catherine is a full-time volunteer at a Free Clinic where she is learning pharmaceutical skills and earning credits towards her goal of working in a Pharmacy.  Catherine's son is still struggling in kindergarten, which is a real source of anxiety and distress for her.  Fortunately, she has a wonderful volunteer named Christina who has offered to tutor Catherine's son so that he can feel more confident in school.   Even though Christina has three young children of her own, she makes time to see Catherine at least once a week.   Catherine was truly amazed that someone could care for her so much, and asked us how Christina came into her life.  We told her, "God put Christina in your life!"  We are grateful that they have such a warm relationship and pray that the support Catherine feels will encourage her to keep pursuing her goals.

BERNADETTE:  In our last newsletter, we told you that Bernadette wanted to take a phlebotomy course, but could not afford it.  One of our faithful readers very generously offered to pay for the class!  What's even better is that Bernadette took the initiative to  explain her situation to the school, and they offered to waive half of the course fee!  This success has inspired several of our residents to organize a bake sale.  Scroll down for details.

ISABEL:   Isabel is originally from Texas, but had been living in  Northern Virginia for three years before coming to Mary's Shelter.  To say she has had a difficult life is  an understatement.  Of all the wild stories we have heard from our residents, hers are among some of the most hair-raising.  She came to us as a 33 year old recovering alcoholic, high school drop-out, and mother of two teenage children with a 3rd on the way.  When she arrived at our beautiful shelter, she cried tears of relief and joy.  She promised to be good, and so far she has been.  She and another mother are taking GED prep courses, she is actively seeking employment, and she is truly making an effort to befriend the other residents and to follow the rules of the house.  Not only is she good, but she is joyful, and that joy is infectious.  During her first week, she came along to the bus station to pick up another new mother, CELINE.  When Celine arrived at Mary's Shelter,  she too cried and asked "what's the catch?!?"  Isabel, having just met Celine,  put her arms around her and said "there is no catch, we have been blessed!"  She has not changed her opinion, and she is still counting her blessings.

In addition to the moms you have read about, Mary's Shelter provides homes to other mothers and children.  Please keep them ALL in your prayers.

Volunteer Corner

An Interview with Lori Fowlkes of Lori Elizabeth Photography

lori

Q: What do your volunteer duties involve?

I feel very privileged to be one of Mary's Shelter's "on call" Photographers.  I get to have all the fun - meeting the moms and these new babies and finding a way to capture how special they are.

Q: How did you first get involved with Mary's Shelter and begin volunteering?

I try to be as active as I can within the pro-life scene.  I used to counsel in a crisis pregnancy center, but now that I have 4 homeschooled kids (with one on the way!) it's just not feasible. With Mary's Shelter I was able to find a way to incorporate my own talents and just go with what I know - Photography!

Q: What is the best part of volunteering at Mary's Shelter? What have you learned from your volunteer experience?

The best part is being able to give these moms a little bit of time captured in an image. I hope that the pictures I create communicate how innocent, sweet and beautiful life is. I really believe that if you can capture how uniquely precious and beautiful each baby is , that image can carry you through any tears or tantrums in the years to come.

Q: What would you recommend for others who want to get more involved in Mary's Shelter through volunteer work?

Don't hesitate. I remember once hearing a priest at St. Mary's say how much more we could accomplish if people would (instead of coming and demanding certain programs or services) come in and say 'here are my hands, what work needs to be done?"  Whatever your talents, there is some aspect of Mary's Shelter that could put that to use!

Q: What is the best thing about Mary's Shelter?

Mary's Shelter is really one of a kind. Some women are local, some come from far away. It's just amazing the way all of the volunteers come together and carve out this safe space for them to just start anew. It's a real blessing for these moms and babies in need. I think Mary's Shelter has some of the best people in our community behind it. Kathleen Wilson does an amazing job with her overall management of the houses.
