How Can I Help?
A Message from DAVID BEREIT, National Director, 40 Days for Life

"My family and I enthusiastically invest in the work of Mary's Shelter because we completely trust Kathleen Wilson and her leadership team - and because we see the tangible results of their work and know that our donations are directly helping mothers and saving babies in our hometown. The 40 Days for Life movement - saving children from abortion on the front lines outside abortion facilities across America and around the globe - depends on ministries like Mary's Shelter that come alongside women during their time of need, helping them throughout their pregnancy and after they give birth. I am proud to support the work of Mary's Shelter and encourage you to join me in supporting this great ministry as well."

A Letter of Testimony
from one of our biggest fans

"I wasn't always a Catholic.  Baptized and confirmed Catholic as an adult, but never really a Catholic.  That is a story for another day.  I went to mass on Sundays and days of obligation, and confession every couple of months, but that is where it ended and I thought I was a pretty good Catholic.  This went on for about 5 years, and then I "moved on" to other things. God was just someone I spoke to when I needed or wanted something, or was lonely, or unhappy.

Most of my adult life I felt that having an abortion was a woman's right to choose.   Of course, I didn't think it should be used as a method of birth control, but that it was fine if it was rape, incest, or if the woman's life was in danger.  Had the need ever arisen, I know I would not have hesitated to use abortion as a means to terminate a pregnancy.  It truly never even crossed my mind that this was a human life with a soul.

A few years ago, I had a heart attack and nearly died.  During my recovery,
I met the most amazing man.  He was Catholic.  A real, faithful Catholic.  After about 4 months of dating him, I started to go to mass.  I didn't receive communion, and didn't think I ever could again.  I sat in the very back, and couldn't even go close to the altar.  I was very uncomfortable as I knew that I wasn't worthy of God's love anymore, and knowing what I believed about abortion in particular, felt I couldn't even begin to pursue a relationship with Him.

One Sunday, we went to mass at St. Matthews in Spotsylvania.  My new man "Joe" was going to be moving to this parish, and wanted to check it out.  We sat in the back, as usual.  I remember thinking that I liked this little church, and kept looking back and forth between the statues of Mary and Jesus and the crucifix.  Right before mass started, the priest came up to Joe and asked if we would bring the gifts to the altar.  Joe said yes.  I panicked.  I told him no, that I couldn't touch the bread or wine and couldn't go anywhere near the altar.  He said that until the priest consecrated the gifts, they were just bread and wine and it would be fine.  I was still very uncomfortable .

I was looking through the missal when a young woman came forward carrying a darling little baby that she introduced as Moses.  She started thanking the people of St. Matthews for what they were doing to help these "Moms" whose families wouldn't support them when they chose Life over abortion.  That because of "us" this little baby was alive and well and would live the life God intended for him.  She repeated that without "us", he would have been  another aborted life.  I can't begin to describe what happened to me next.  For the first time in my life, I realized that what I thought was okay to "terminate" was a human being.  That if it had been up to me, little Moses would have been killed a long time ago and never been there with us on that Sunday morning.  I began to cry and couldn't stop.  All I could think of was little Moses being dead, and it being my fault.  I sat there crying and begging for God's forgiveness.

It was almost impossible for me to compose myself enough to carry the gifts to the priest.   He  smiled at me and said "God Bless you guys".  I could barely make it back to my seat without thinking that he wouldn't have said that if he had known what I had done.

I finally stopped crying, and knew immediately that I wanted to confess everything I had done for the last 15 years against God's laws and his commandments.  I knew I wanted to be a faithful Catholic more than anything and experience God's love again.  I also knew that I had some serious work to do starting with helping Mary's Shelter and all the babies born and unborn like Moses, and to pray for the souls of all the little ones that never had the chance to breathe the fresh air before their lives ended.

Joe and I were married, and are now active and happy members of St. Matthew's parish. I started working with and for pro-life groups to try and convince other people like me that life begins at conception and that it is then that God gives us our souls.

I never saw Moses again, or met his Mom, a woman who demonstrated God's love to me in a very profound way, but I know that somewhere out there is a little boy who brought me back to God, and played a large role in my journey to a new life.  I thank God every day, for little Moses and that beautiful Sunday morning in Spotsylvania. A Note from our Director

Welcome to our
Mary's Shelter newsletter!

Thanks for all the wonderful responses to our first newsletter.  We had a happy Thanksgiving at Mary's Shelter and are looking forward to  Christmas!  We are thankful to the many who have already offered their love and support to our mothers and children during this beautiful season.  Your generosity and prayers are what keep this ministry going.  We, at Mary's Shelter, wish you and your families a Merry, Holy  Christmas and Happy, Healthy New Year.
 May God bless you all.
In Christ,
Kathleen Wilson

It is Christmas every time you let God love others through you...yes, it is Christmas every time you smile at your brother and offer him your hand.

A Thanksgiving Story

While many of the mothers and children living in our homes had friends or family to visit for Thanksgiving, three of our mothers and their combined five children stayed at Mary's Shelter. They spent the day before Thanksgiving cooking and baking, although our understanding is that "Rose" did most of the cooking :) Just after putting the turkey in the oven, Rose's heart began racing, and she was rushed to the ER!   She stayed overnight for observation, and was released Thanksgiving morning, just in time for the feast she had made!  We are very thankful that Rose is okay, although she is scheduled to see a cardiologist.  And she is especially thankful that she didn't miss Thanksgiving!  The three ladies shared a delicious meal, watched Christmas movies with their kids, and had a really lovely day together.  They are thankful in a way that many have never experienced, and it was heartwarming for those of us who got to be part of this beautiful event.

Resident Profiles

christmas card pic

These are stories of some of the moms and children presently living at Mary's Shelter.  In the above Christmas card photo are three of the many babies Mary's Shelter has helped bring into the world.  We ask for your continued prayers and support of all our mothers and children who live with us now, and those that have moved on to the next phase of their lives.

Gianna
"Gianna" went home for her 24th birthday and Thanksgiving to let her family know about her pregnancy, and her decision to raise the baby herself.  When Gianna first came to Mary's Shelter, she felt sure she wanted to put her baby up for adoption.  But in recent weeks, she has slowly come to change her mind.  Her family was totally shocked to learn of her pregnancy, and although it took them some time to get used to the idea, they are now very supportive of her decision and want to help her raise the baby.  Gianna has really suffered a lot these last few months, agonizing over what decision to make, while keeping her pregnancy a secret from the close-knit family she loves.  Since her return from the much-anticipated visit home, she is clearly breathing easier
We rejoice that she has reconciled with her family and that she feels confident and supported.

Veronica

"Veronica" has a few weeks left until she gives birth to her child.  She recently got hired at a nice shop downtown, and is very glad to be working!  Although she is having some uncomfortable moments,  she loves feeling the baby kick and is in awe of his every move.  She is in frequent contact with the adoptive parents she has chosen, and although she gets sad sometimes, she feels very much at peace with her adoption plan.  She has been crocheting a blanket for her baby boy since the beginning of her pregnancy, and she has just completed the last touch, embroidering his name at the bottom.  Please keep this mother in your prayers as she comes to the end of a very difficult physical, psychological, and spiritual journey.

Catherine
Mary's Shelter recently welcomed  "Catherine" and her five year old son.  Catherine had been living in a domestic violence shelter prior to coming to Mary's Shelter.  The counselors there love Catherine and have such faith in her desire to make a better life for her family.  They looked long and hard to find another home that would provide Catherine the support she needs in bringing a new child into the world.  Catherine arrived on a Monday morning and by that afternoon she had her son enrolled in school and her appointments made for Social Services and the Health Department.  She is now actively seeking employment.  Catherine just ended her first trimester, so we should find out soon whether she is having a boy or girl!  We'll keep you posted.

Maria
"Maria" is still working hard at getting her life in order and making the necessary changes to better provide for her family.  Maria is adjusting well to the first full-time job she has held in years.  Although she is, of course, exhausted, she is greatly blessed to have a baby that sleeps very well through the night!  Recently, Maria asked for a few months extension at Mary's Shelter to give her time to save a little more money.  She has been approved as she is dedicated and hard-working.  The difference in the Maria that came to Mary's Shelter and the Maria now is almost miraculous.  It has been a blessing to see the changes in her life.  Her baby boy is the cute little guy in the middle of the Christmas card picture!  Please continue to keep Maria and her two beautiful children in your prayers.

Rose
"Rose" has been living at Mary's Shelter for 5 months.  In September, she gave birth to her third baby boy, featured on the left-hand side of the Christmas card!  She has been one of the most outstanding residents we have ever had!  She found our shelter completely by the grace of God, after numerous web searches and dead ends.  When she had just about given up hope, she found our website and called the phone number.  But the phone number listed was wrong
! It was a mistake on the website and yet miraculously, she got through to Kathleen!  When we discovered this, she instantly recognized God's hand in leading her to Mary's Shelter, and is filled with gratitudeShe has been a model resident, a great example to the other ladies, and a real source of wisdom and humility.  She is working as a med-tech at a nursing home, and doing absolutely everything to ensure a bright and successful future.

Elizabeth
"Elizabeth" will be the first mother to grace our shelters with TWINS!  Although we are very excited for her, she has a rough road ahead.  She has many health problems, and her pregnancy is considered high-risk. She also has a very lively 5 year-old boy! Please pray that Elizabeth has a healthy pregnancy, and that her babies, a boy and a girl,  make it to their due date in April!

Volunteering
*Our Mary Washington Students once again deserve a big hug for all their help at our homes.  Thank you for the painting, the babysitting, and for being such inspirational young adults!

*Special thanks to "Angel's Wings", the homeschooling girls club, who helped decorate one of our shelters for Christmas!

*What a tremendous surprise from Cub Scout Pack 325!  At a pack meeting last weekend at St. Patrick's Church, a HUGE group of scouts donated enough Christmas gifts to fill Kathleen's 12 passenger van!  Kathleen had so much fun judging cakes and pies with Fr. Taylor, and was so touched by the great turn-out and outpouring of generosity.  The children living at our shelters will have a wonderful surprise Christmas morning.  Thank you!  Take a look at pictures from the meeting on our website!

*A huge thank you to Mr. Carlton Bullock, handyman extraordinaire, for the countless hours of repair work he has given to our homes.

*We are so excited to begin working with Penny and Kim at Delivered Doulas.  Pregnancy and childbirth can be frightening and lonely for many of our ladies, who are usually lacking both support and information.  Having the support of an experienced doula can make all the difference.  Thank you Penny and Kim!

Volunteer Corner
From Mary's Shelter's trusty handyman, Mr. Carlton R. Bullock, Jr:

"Over the past year, I've enjoyed volunteering my time to Mary's Shelter by handling home maintenance issues for the houses.  It's been a pleasure teaching the mothers what is involved in keeping a home maintained and watching them take responsibility for their residences.  When the women have a sense of ownership in their houses, they can be depended on to uphold the high standards of home care and maintenance encouraged at Mary's Shelter, preparing them for independence and conscientious living."

There is no shortage of women in need and Mary's Shelter will continue to grow as the Lord provides additional means. We are working hard at Mary's Shelter to build a strong base of supporters and volunteers. We have two main goals:

1) To create an up-to-date mailing list of current and potential financial supporters
 2) To enhance our program with dedicated volunteers and interesting and relevant activities

Please help us by spreading the word about Mary's Shelter and by considering a volunteer commitment. Please visit our revamped website to get to know us better. You can find us at www.marysshelterva.org
