Greetings!
It's been nearly four months since the last newsletter in November. I must apologize for the length of time since I've shared what's new with the Heartland Model as well as the size of this email!
There has been so many newsworthy events happening that every time I've been about to send the newsletter there was something else just about ready to release that needed to be included. This happened repeatedly as even more exciting things emerged on the horizon that beckoned to be shared. I have endeavored not to overload your email inbox by sending only a newsletter per month or less, but this has resulted in very large newsletters so packed with information that it takes quite a commitment in time to read and absorb it all! Many have indicated that more frequent, smaller emails would be preferable. I am going to take that advice and (following this lengthy newsletter) try to send important and relevant information to you in a more timely manner.
The number of newsworthy items over the first quarter of this year has been incredible, my notes alone are more than a page in length, so in this newsletter you will find more in the way of links to the information - with short explanations - so you can more easily chose which news items are of most interest to you.

2011 Progress Report of the Heartland Model Book of Mormon Evidences Research

We have received multiple requests from "Heartland Model" supporters (aka "Heartlanders") for an update on the progress of the Heartland Model geography. The following is a very brief report on the continued growth and development of this research.
There are several ways to gauge the growth and expansion of the Heartland Model Book of Mormon geography. Indications can come from the number of presentations requested and completed, attendance at those presentations, website visits and page views, newsletter signups, articles in other media, and the effort expended by others in attempts to refute the research.
Some statistics from 2011:

2011 saw unprecedented growth and acceptance of the Heartland Model geography research world-wide and we are very pleased to note that Deseret Book and Seagull Book, as well as scores of independent LDS bookstores, have been having tremendous success carrying our DVD's and books due to overwhelming demand for more information by you, our wonderful fellow "Heartlanders" as we are being called. 1st Qtr. 2012 Progress Report

The past three months has seen unprecedented growth and acceptance of the Heartland Model.
In February we ran a beautiful full-page ad on page 4 of LDSLiving Magazine. The ad featured Elder Hartman Rector Jr., Glenn Beck, and Kieth Merrill along with The Lost Civilizations of North America documentary, the new picture book (Exploring the Book of Mormon in America's Heartland) and Prophecies & Promises. We have enjoyed a very positive response from the ad. The issue is for April-May.
Alan Osmond, of the famed Osmond family is joining us along with his wife Suzanne on our very special June tour of the Heartland Model geography! During LDS General Conference we had the opportunity to further expose members of the Church to this research through several 30-second TV ads on KSL-TV between and after conference sessions. The response was amazing, with 1500+ visitors to the website(s) after each airing of the ad. Special THANKS to Bryan Illguth for design and production work as well as the many who contributed their thoughts and ideas to the making of the ad.
The picture book, Exploring the Book of Mormon in America's Heartland is turning out to be a highly sought after tool in educating members of the Church about the evidences of the Book of Mormon. Having been in Deseret Book, Seagull Book and numerous LDS bookstores, we just delivered the first orders to Costco, a membership warehouse chain for their Utah locations.
We have also just finalized the SECOND PRINTING of Exploring the Book of Mormon in America's Heartland as we are now nearly out of stock of this beautiful heirloom quality book. The new edition will take two months to arrive. The new edition will have a slightly higher suggested retail price of $39.95, so if you still have not ordered your copy we suggest you do so immediately before they are all gone. We expect them to be depleted in the next week or two. Then orders will have to wait until the new shipment arrives.

NATIONAL BOOK OF MORMON EVIDENCE CONFERENCE
Held Friday, March 30th - Sandy, Utah (SLC area)
The 9th Semi-Annual National Book of Mormon Evidence Conference was a wonderfully "Hebraic" experience with more attendee's, more excitement, and more evidences than ever before, with a focus on ancient Hebrew symbolism among the Hopewell/Nephite civilization! Originally planned for 200 participants, the venue had to be reconfigured and expanded three times to accommodate the overwhelming 420 registered attendee's crowding into the South Towne Exposition Center's large halls. Notable attendee's included Alan & Suzanne Osmond, Sister Mary Ellen Smoot (former Relief Society General President), Dr. Robert Fuller, Idaho Senator Lee Heider, Dr. Bruce Widner, Dr. Lincoln Fuqua, Bill & Kathrine Engemann, Larry Ferguson, and many more. Attendee's travelled to the conference from the distant lands of Russia, Netherlands and Canada as well as throughout the United States!

Heartland Model in the Media!

Did you see the television ads introducing the Heartland Model geography to the worldwide KSL-TV audience during General Conference? This was the very first TV spot ever aired in support of the Heartland Model. We would like to thank all those who's generous contributions made it possible to run several 30-second ads before, between and after the conference sessions. You can watch the ad by clicking on the image below!
During 2011 there were dozens of articles in newspapers, magazines and online involving the Heartland Model geography both pro and con. Several organizations that routinely promote Mesoamerican theories published articles on their websites and printed materials. As one fellow "Heartlander" put it, "you can tell you are over the target when you are receiving a lot of flak!" That this is the case can be clearly demonstrated by the number of attack articles that have come forth.
Yet the barrage is actually causing further interest as members want to find out why so much angst and vitriol has been injected into these arguments. This is likely to continue, but there have been recent attempts to quell these ongoing attacks. An excellent article in Meridian Magazine by Lenet Read titled Mesoamerican Model or Heartland Model: Must Only One of Them Be Right?, makes an attempt to bridge the gap between the two "most predominant" models of Book of Mormon geography.
Several of the comments following the article mention the "virulence," "childish petulance," and "small minded bickering" with which "both sides in the geography debate" have "derided one another," which is "downright embarrassing to members of our faith." We agree that what has been happening has been an embarrassment, but where has the derision been coming from? A look at our website(s) demonstrates that it has not been coming from we Heartlanders, but from Mesoamerican devotee's and their organizations.
As a principle researcher of the Heartland Model geography, I decided that it was time to respond, which I did in their comments sections as well as on the FIRMLDS.org website. Read the reply article online HERE or the comments HERE.

At the end of the year Mormon Times published a clever New Years article by Dr. Daniel Peterson of the Maxwell Institute titled May Your New Year Begin Better than Amalickiah's in which he references the account of Teancum slaying the wicked Amalickiah on the last day of their year (Alma 51:33-37). The record states that their army was fatigued because of their labors and the "heat of the day." Peterson then dismisses the Heartland Model, claiming that is is "virtually certain that the story didn't occur in...the upper Midwest." He then provides average January temperature in Rochester, New York to substantiate his claims. The only problem is, the Heartland Model has already explained Nephite calendaring is not the same as today, and the primary areas we are suggesting is nearer to St. Louis than Rochester, thus Peterson's suggestion is invalid and indeed ill informed. The first "Podcast" for the Heartland Model has been completed by LDSLiberty.com! Following the podcast are numerous comments which have been replied to by Rod Meldrum. It is a lengthy discussion but has some very good information within it. It is highly recommended that those interested take a few minutes to review the material. You will find the Heartland Model to be capable of defending the gospel very well against critics. Even Mesoamerican proponent attackers!

Writer Alan Rock Waterman published his thoughts about the Heartland Model geography in an article on his website called "Best Evidence for the Book of Mormon." Typical of anything published online of a positive nature towards the Heartland Model, Mesoamericanists pounced on Waterman, gushing forth with hundreds of negative comments on his blog. His article is worth a good read and all the negativity coming from the self-destructing Mesoamerican theories can be readily seen from their comments.

Renown author, attorney and blogger Denver Snuffer has made a number of comments on his blog regarding the Heartland Model research. Denver's book, The Second Comforter, is a personal favorite of this author (Rod Meldrum) and should be read by anyone serious about understanding what is required to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven and having their Calling & Election made sure. His blog articles are "Central America or North America" and "Remnant Part 1."

Another blogger who has discovered the Heartland Model geography and reviewed it online has been posted on the website Telemoonfa Time. The article, "Book of Mormon Land Discovered!" details the thoughts of another LDS member who finds the Heartland Model information compelling and faith promoting.

FIRMly Defending the Heartland by Rod L. Meldrum

Over the past three months I've had the opportunity to meet and counsel with a number of individuals for their knowledgeable perspectives and unwavering faithfulness to the gospel. On my mind has been ongoing misinformation against this research.
For over four years those engaged in research exploring America's Heartland for Book of Mormon evidence have been almost continually attacked, yet we have not directly responded to or refuted the onslaught of aggressive and confrontational articles, blogs and books published by Mesoamerica theory proponents and their sponsoring organizations. We have not responded primarily because we have felt it would cause an escalation of hostilities which might hurt the reputation of the Church as non-members find "Mormon High Priests slugging it out," online and in print. For this reason we have not responded directly to these attacks but rather have addressed them indirectly through our educational materials. Still the attacks continue, spurred on by our lack of response. Unfortunately, this has lead to some latter-day saints forming the opinion that we have not responded because we have no answers. This is simply not the case.
As I have watched recent political debates and campaigning it has become clear that even baseless and unsubstantiated attacks can and do inflict damage to the reputations and positions of those on the receiving end, but even more so against those who do nothing to defend themselves. I was asked some time ago if I had ever coached any teams, to which I responded I had. The next question, "How many games would you win if you played only offense or defense?" caught me a little of guard. I replied that playing only one or the other would likely result in getting severely beaten, to which came the retort "then why are you only playing offense in this research?" After some consideration I realized what was meant...we have simply been trying to share what we have found, but we have not been defending it, at least not directly. Political figures are often placed in a position where it becomes necessary to defend themselves from misleading and deceitful attacks so that the truth can become known. Our situation is not much different.
When I asked fellow "Heartlanders" in a questionnaire nearly two years ago, "Would you like to have the FIRM Foundation provide objective responses to articles critical of the Heartland Model in order to answer questions, if done in a Christ-like, non-confrontational and respectful way?" An overwhelming 90% indicated "YES."
After much consideration it has become apparent that in order for misinformation to be corrected it is necessary to address it, however, we must be very careful about how we address the critiques in order to avoid escalation into a war of publicized words. Nevertheless, as can be currently demonstrated by a review of our websites, we have been slow to respond to these articles and organizations and only recently addressed a few of the false and misleading statements in the new 6 DVD series, but not online. We have done our best to be objective, respectful and refrain from personal attacks in doing so. The Lord taught that we should forgive the trespasses of others even to 70 x 7 (Matt. 18:22, D&C 98:40). Based on the number of internet pages, publications and blog comments devoted to attacking us, now numbering in the thousands. I believe we have long surpassed that requirement and would be justified in more directly addressing the ongoing attacks.
In this and future newsletters we begin the process of addressing some of the false or incorrect information being perpetrated and will be publishing on our website objective responses to our critics so that the truth about our positions can be properly understood. We hope that you will join us in this effort to provide well reasoned and informative responses to our critics. As we do so, we are confident that the reputation of the Church we love will not be harmed, but will ultimately be made stronger because of the powerful new evidences that have the capacity to better defend the Book of Mormon.
Just as a political candidate's reputation is strengthened through providing solid evidence of the truth, so we should do all we can to show forth the evidences of the truthfulness of Book of Mormon by correcting false and misleading criticisms with sound research and solid evidence.
