The Sounds of Stow Chorus and Orchestra, under the direction of NEPTA member Barbara Jones, will present Shostakovich's second piano concerto, Gregory Tolwinski, piano, on Sunday, March 18 at 3pm. Gregory began his piano with Barbara Jones and continued his studies with Sergei Schepkin. Greg is completing his masters in piano performance at Boston Conservatory. In addition to this "uncharacteristically cheerful" concerto, the chorus and orchestra will perform Mendelssohn's "Verleih' uns Frieden" and "Hear My Prayer," and give the area premier of Bob Chilcott's 2010 "Requiem" in the tradition of Faure and Rutter. The concert is held at the Hale Middle School in Stow center, Rt. 117. Tickets available at the door. Information at soundsofstow.org or at 978-562-0302.

FEBRUARY GREETINGS
COLLEEN CAMBELL
Dear NEPTA Colleagues,

NEPTA's offerings this past month have been rich indeed! From distinguished scholar and NEPTA member Elfrieda Hiebert's brilliant presentation at our January Speaker Series to the exciting Intermediate I Student Recitals to the amazing All NEPTA Teachers' Recital on February 4, we have abounded in wonderful opportunities for pedagogical study and artistic expression.

Dr. Hiebert provided a fascinating retrospective on the study and development of the pedal in piano composition. Her demonstrations at the piano were particularly enlightening and a lively Q&A session followed. Dr. Hiebert received an enthusiastic and well-deserved ovation. Linda Vieira has prepared notes from the morning which can be accessed here: Speaker Series Minutes: January

A wonderful segue to Elfrieda Hiebert's presentation will be offered to us by John McDonald on Monday, February 27, 2012 at our next Speaker Series event. We will have an opportunity to hear a composer's own views on pedaling and other topics as Mr. McDonald presents "Returning to Simplicity with New Music."

I hope to see you at our next gathering!

Yours,

Colleen Campbell

President

ALL NEPTA TEACHERS' RECITAL AND FUNDRAISER
ALL NEPTA TEACHERS' RECITAL & FUNDRAISER

Something extraordinary happens when twelve exceptional pianists who have taught and performed great music for their whole lives come together to share their distinctive interpretations with us on the concert stage. Last Saturday night the All NEPTA Teachers' Recital held at Rivera Hall in Weston was such an event. We heard a stunning potpourri of repertoire played with breathtaking technique and elegant nuance. The gorgeous concert hall provided the perfect venue, and a gracious reception of delicious food and drink completed a very magical evening!

Congratulations and heartfelt thanks to the performers for their great artistry and generosity: Tatyana Shrago, Shizue Sano, Anne Munstedt, Tanya Schwartzman, Deborah Yardley Beers, Michelle Kelley, Lilit Karapetian-Shougarian, Robert Finley, Monica Godoy Tessitore, Veda Kogan, Vladimir Gurin and Tamara Medoyeva. Very special thanks to the Recital Coordinators, Irina Gelman and Indiana Chalsen, to Lindsey Robb who served as Rivers School Liaison and Stage Director, Robert Finley who videorecorded the concert, and Kathy Maskell for her invaluable assistance.

This Fundraiser brought in over $400 for the Susan B. Demb Teacher Enrichment Fund. If you were unable to attend please consider sending a donation to NEPTA c/o Lindsey Robb, Treasurer, 40 Montvale Street #3, Jamaica Plain, MA 02131.

PROGRAM IDEAS FOR 2012-2013
The NEPTA Program Committee is meeting on February 13 to plan next year's Speaker Series and Master Class events.  We would like to learn what topics you want to know more about, who you would like to hear as a speaker, or if you have attended or know of a presentation that you think would be of interest and worth to our membership. Please send any suggestions about topics and/or speakers that you would like to have as part of the 2012-13 NEPTA Program to shannwood@comcast.net.

NEPTA A STILL A NON-PROFIT
neptalogojpeg
There has been some confusion about NEPTA's acquisition of the additional URL "nepta.com". This is simply a redirect to our real website, www.nepta.info. We are still, and always will be, a nonprofit organization with a strong commitment to "students, colleagues and society."
PARKING IN WATERTOWN
PARKING METER -COLLEEN CAMPBELL Please be aware that Watertown has restricted parking on the side streets immediately surrounding the First Parish church and thus eliminating any "free parking." The good news is that the metered spots in the parking lot adjacent to the church can accept coins up to a maximum of 8 hours (blue meters only), thereby removing the need to go feed the meter during our meeting breaks, offering instead an opportunity to socialize with NEPTA friends and colleagues.
