OCTOBER GREETINGS

Dear NEPTA Colleagues,

"Chi va piano, va sano e lontano" is a lovely Italian proverb which means "one who goes slowly goes wisely and far."  Our September speaker, Scott McBride Smith, illustrated this concept beautifully in his presentation on the "Fundamentals of Good Tone". He emphasized the importance of training students from their first moments at the piano in the basics of posture, hand development and careful sound production.

In the second part of his presentation Dr. Smith discussed stage

fright, its causes and permutations, and gave practical tips on how to help students in managing it. This was the perfect choice for the first Susan B. Demb Teacher Enrichment Program.  Hand-outs from Dr. Smith's presentation are available here:

I hope that we will have an equally enthusiastic turn out for our next meeting on October 24 at the First Parish in Watertown when our featured speaker will be Gail Berenson.  Please plan to arrive early for NEPTA's music sale, managed wonderfully by Ruth Ross.

Best Regards,

Colleen Campbell

President

ANNUAL REPORT
NEPTA's Fiscal Year 2011 Annual Report and Auditor's Report were submitted by Lindsey Robb, Treasurer, to NEPTA's Board of Directors in late August 2011. The Board approved and accepted the Annual Report at the Directors' meeting on September 12, 2011. Many thanks to Lindsey Robb for keeping our financial house in such superb order, and to Cindy Null for expertly performing the internal audit. Copies of the Annual Report are available to the membership upon request.
NEPTA MUSIC FOR SALE

A very successful NEPTA Music Sale, run by Ruth Ross, netted $220 for the Scholarship Fund. Many thanks to Ruth for her countless hours of organizing and heavy lifting.

The next sale will take place on October 24 starting at 9:00am, one half hour before the NEPTA meeting begins. Arrive early for the best shopping! If you are looking for a particular book or edition, please contact Ruth in advance at: rrosspiano@aol.com.

MIRIAM PIZER AWARD
The Miriam Pizer Award, created in memory of Miriam Pizer, was established for students Grades K-5 who are in need of assistance for lesson tuition or other essential expenses. Please send your name along with your student's name by email to Colleen Cambell at  colleencampbellpiano@gmail.com.
GRANTS-IN-AID
In these uncertain economic times, it is comforting to know that NEPTA can help some students' families ease their burdens. Eight $125 awards will be given this year to students of NEPTA members who are in need of financial assistance. A brief note, letter or email from the teacher stating the family's need and reasons for aid should be sent to Carol Chaffee at carolgaryc@aol.com. There is no age requirement. Please refer to page 14 of the program book for more information.
OCTOBER MEETING
Gail Berenson, Professor of Piano at Ohio University, will present "Bach to Bartok and Beyond: Collaboration of Physical Gestures and Sound Concepts in the Teaching of Style" on Monday, October 24, 2011 at 9:30am.  A Past President of Music Teachers National Association, she has performed and lectured in over thirty states and eight countries. Ms. Berenson is one of the co-authors of A Symposium for Pianists and Teachers: Strategies to Develop Mind and Body for Optimal Performance.
TEACHERS' EXCHANGE
Find out how teachers can play an important role in uncovering, nurturing, and guiding the development of students' creativity at the piano. Three piano teachers with notable experience in composing -- Deborah Yardley Beers, Donna Gross Javel, and Ruth Shyu -- will share with us their perspectives and ideas, from specific exercises involving improvisation and composition projects for students, to general thoughts on how teachers can develop such creativity in themselves and enhance their own teaching and performing work.
This meeting will be at the home of Adele Dreyer; 166 Burgess Avenue, Westwood, MA.

Directions: Take exit 19B onto Route 109 from Route 128. Drive 3 miles to the light at Burgess Avenue on the right. Drive .4 mile up the hill. Adele's is the beige house on the left, #166.

TECH SUPPORT REQUEST
We are in need of a technical assistant to help with projectors, screens and setup at NEPTA Speaker events. This is a chance to assist the wonderful pianists  who share their mornings with us.
