As a new season approaches, giving us hope with warmer temperatures and increasing daylight, our thoughts turn towards year end recitals, and preparing our students for these events. The skills that Cristina Capparelli Gerling outlined, in her talk regarding Memory research, can easily be applied in our studios and will be so useful in long term memory success. Cristina's involvement in this field reflects her commitment to helping others and NEPTA was very fortunate to have her share these observations and results. Many thanks to Jean Alderman for preparing our meeting notes, which can be read by clicking here.

Our Monday, March 22 meeting features Bruce Brubaker, Chair of the Piano Department at New England Conservatory, speaking on "Access to the New Repertory."  Bruce's performance background is extensive and includes many premiers by modern composers -- Philip Glass, John Cage, Nico Muhly among others -- and so we look forward to his perspective on this exciting component of our teaching libraries. Please note that Colleen Campbell, NEPTA Vice President, will be standing in for me, as I will be attending the MTNA Conference in Albuquerque, NM.

New and Much Improved Website

Some very exciting changes have been made to our website, www.nepta.info, thanks to the extensive volunteer guidance and implementation by Sue Demb, our resident webmaster, along with NEPTA's paid website contractor, Roger Weiss from the Boston Web Company.

The words "many many thanks" do not even begin to describe the appreciation that I have for Sue Demb's hours and hours of time devoted to the development of this website. NEPTA is truly fortunate to have had Sue's long term vision and direction in attaining this interactive website status. NEPTA will benefit for years to come and I hope you join me in celebrating and acknowledging her invaluable contributions.

Below is Sue's letter describing the changes and updates.

Dear NEPTA Member,

I am pleased to let you know that the updated NEPTA website is now available.

Changes have been made to two areas:

FOR MEMBERS section has the following new links:

1. Membership Directory where you can access members by last name or by town.

2. Update Your Information where you can change information, including signing up to have your name available for piano teacher referrals from the website.

3. Pay Your Dues where you can update your information and pay your dues using a credit card or PayPal. After you pay your dues, you can "continue shopping" and make a donation to the Scholarship Fund. The payment is processed by PayPal, but you don't have to have a PayPal account to use it. There is an option to pay using any major credit card. OR you can print out a form and mail it with a check.

4. Donate to the Scholarship Fund where you can make a donation with a credit card OR you can print out a form for mailing a check.

These four new links all require that you log in to access them. The first time you log in you will have to create a new password, which you can change in the future. If you forget it, you can have it emailed to you. On the first log in page, click on the link "Create or Change Your Password" to create your password.

FIND A TEACHER -- New!
If you have updated your information and checked that you want referrals from the website, click on the "Find a Teacher" link at the top of the page and put your zip code in the form. You should see your listing, with all the information you added to the form. Want to add more or change something? Just go back and update your information. Don't want referrals any more, go back and update your information by unchecking the checkbox "Do you want referrals from the website?".

My thanks go to Janna Bruene, Lydia Reed-Guertin, Carol Chaffee, and Joan Reddy for creating an introductory paragraph for the Find a Teacher page. It will give people visiting the site some good ideas for choosing a piano teacher.

I hope you enjoy these new features. They will make many volunteer jobs for NEPTA easier.

Please let me know what you think and if you have any problems with the site.

NEPTA Music for Sale

music pages
Our NEPTA music sale is back by popular demand, once again graciously organized by Ruth Ross, Music Library and Donations Chair. Please join us prior to the March 22 meeting at the First Parish starting at 9am. Members are asked to bring their checkbooks and any music that they are willing to donate that morning. Music on sale that morning will include some collections from our NEPTA Music Library that Ruth is gradually disbanding, with prices ranging from $1-$2.

The sale serves three purposes: 1) teachers have access to music that perhaps has gone out of print; 2) standard teaching methods and collections can be acquired at a very reasonable price; 3) lastly, all proceeds go directly to the NEPTA Scholarship Fund.  Please direct any questions to Ruth Ross at [email protected].

Wanda Paik Awards

On Feb. 28th at the NEPTA Intermediate ll Recitals, the following students were chosen for the four "Wanda Paik Awards." It was a very competitive year with 12 students entering. Congratulations to both students and their teachers:

Joy Chen, student of Luba Pyatkovskaya
Tong Xu, student of Mila Filatova
Christopher Chen, student of Tanya Schwartzman
Ellen Liu, student of Margarita Gurevich

Submitted by Janice Zaganjori, Chair

Many thanks to Janice for devoting the afternoon to this endeavor! I also wish to thank our Intermediate II Committee, Lyubov Shlain, Ludmilla Bekker and Selma Ramic, as well as the Senior Recital Committee, Niva Fried, Janet Ainsworth and Eleanor McLaughlin for their tireless organizational efforts in ensuring two afternoons of beautiful music performances by our students. It has been a joy to hear these recitals.  Bravo!

Volunteer Newsletter Editor Needed

NEPTA's changeover to Constant Contact Newsletter format this year could not have happened without the support and dedication from our newsletter editor, Cindy Null. Cindy's technical expertise and proofreading/editorial skills have made my job writing this electronic monthly newsletter, very enjoyable and seamless. In fact, she along with Sue Demb often coordinates the uploaded materials on the NEPTA website, as well as inserting links within the newsletter. As some of you may know, Cindy has been involved with the distribution process for several years now, making sure that our members receive a timely and professional copy of the latest news and announcements from NEPTA.

Cindy will be changing her role within NEPTA, and so we are now looking for a volunteer replacement beginning in the fall of 2010. Cindy has very generously offered to mentor this person providing them with skills necessary to deliver the newsletter to our members. This position can be done completely in the comfort of your own home, so if you do live far away from the Watertown meetings, and wish to be more involved with NEPTA this would be the perfect opportunity!

If you are interested please contact Cindy at [email protected]. Thank you Cindy for your tremendous devotion and efforts!
