Green Foundation Volunteer Receives Cox Conserves Heroes Grant Award
Thomas Guss (age 16 and shown in the photo above), a volunteer with the Green Corps, the youth service group of the Newport News Green Foundation, was recently named a finalist in the Cox Conserves Heroes Grant Program. He is one of five individuals who made it to the finals and received $1,250 to donate to the charity of his choice - the Newport News Green Foundation. Thomas was selected for his dedication to the environment as well as his ability to mobilize a community to participate in his project.
As part of his volunteer efforts, Thomas installed 1,000 pine seedlings at the Foundation's Chatham Pond and maintained trash and litter cleanup at the property through the Boy Scouts of America's Order of the Arrow.

Voting for the final winner begins on March 7th and will continue through April 4th. The Green Foundation will need your help to get the word out and share the video about Thomas and his project with the world! Every vote counts. Look for more information in your inbox soon.

Green Corps Rain Barrels

The Newport News Green Foundation's Green Corps have a number of rain barrels left over from their annual fundraiser at the Fall Festival of Folklife. Barrels are approximately 55 gallons and range in price from $50-$100. Some barrels are decorated and some are plain. Barrels are available for delivery to the local area or for pickup. These rain barrels are handmade from recycled materials and are sturdier and more economical than those sold in most retail outlets. For more information email info@newportnewsgreenfoundation.org. |
