TAKE THREE
Film Commission Hosts Documentary Shoot of His Holiness The Dalai Lama's Visit to Memphis
Native Memphian/transplanted Los Angeles entertainment executive Rebekah
Alperin contacted the Film Commission Office in May to coordinate plans
for a documentary shoot on His Holiness The Dalai Lama's visit to
Memphis, September 22nd and 23rd.
Coming
to receive the National Civil Rights Museum/Hyde Family Foundations
International Freedom Award, the Dalai Lama's busy schedule
included not only the documentary shoot, but also a talk on "peace
and harmony" for lucky ticket-holders at Memphis' Cannon Center.
In a mayoral welcoming ceremony coordinated through the State Department's
Diplomatic Security Service, Memphis Police Department, and the Film Commission, the double mayoral
welcome concluded with His Holiness' clasping the hands of both Mayor
Lowery and Mayor Wharton in the best show of City/County consolidation
yet!

From the Dalai Lama's visit...

Dressed in the traditional clothing of
his native country, Tibetan musician and warrior Loten Namling enjoys a
warm Memphis welcome from city "star," Donna Davis!

During his
visit to Memphis, His Holiness The Dalai Lama blessed the Mississippi River
-- a blessing complete with Tibetan khata.

Within the hour,
Mud Island River Park GM, Trey Guintini, received the same blessed khata as a
gift from the Dalai Lama for The Mississippi River Museum. Film Commissioner
Linn Sitler (right) makes the presentation.
 The place? Memphis' Malco Paradiso
Theatre. The occasion? The 35mm Kundun screening and champagne
supper reception for the Dalai Lama's out-of-town guests and
documentary crew. Another city "star," Honey Hohenberg Scheidt, shines in
Tibetan silk! The evening's events were hosted by Malco Theatres, Inc.; The
Memphis & Shelby Co. Film and Television Commission; and Sam Phillips
Recording/Knox Music. (Yak Yogurt and Tibetan Dumplings by Anne Barnes of
Just Catering.)

This trio stayed
for the special 35mm post-reception screening of Martin Scorscese's Kundun:
(left to right) The Commercial Appeal's film writer, John Beifuss;
Diane Duncan, long-time sweetheart of Knox Phillips; and Knox Phillips himself
-- a co-host of the evening's events.
