Custard Stand Food Products LLC announced today its 2009 sales topped $1 million, a first in the six-year history of the West Virginia-based company.
CSFP, owned by Dee and Angie Cowger of Webster Springs, produces Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili, America's Tastiest Hot Dog Chili. CSFP is the sister company of Custard Stand LLC.
"We are very excited to have met our goal of $1 million in sales, especially during such tough economic times," says Angie Cowger. "We have experienced positive gains every year. While this year was only a small gain of slightly more than two percent, we are very proud of ourselves, our family and our employees. We are very thankful to our wholesale and retail partners."
"But most of all to all our loyal customers! We know the economy forced many folks to spend more cautiously. We are pleased that they chose to buy our product and eat at our restaurants."
West Virginia Commissioner of Agriculture Gus R. Douglass praised the Cowgers for their accomplishments. "What they have achieved in a relatively short amount of time is a true testament to their tenacity and their superb product," he said. "I'm pleased that the West Virginia Department of Agriculture Marketing and Development staff could assist them in taking their product to a broader market. The greatest reward in my job is when I see fellow West Virginians succeed."
Custard Stand Hot Dog Chili is sold in 10 states by Walmart, Sam's Club, Kroger and independent retailers. In March 2009, the Cowgers opened a second restaurant in Flatwoods, along Interstate 79. The flagship Custard Stand is in Webster Springs.
Coming in 2010
CSFP will introduce two products, educate consumers about the versatility of its signature Hot Dog Chili and will expand its retail presence in existing and new markets. The Cowgers recently visited Walmart and Kroger headquarters. A meeting at Sam's Club headquarters is slated for February.
Other plans include starting online retail and exploring franchising options for The Custard Stand restaurant concept.
"We remain committed to using social media as a way to make our products and restaurants a household name," says Angela Cowger. CSFP has engaged Crystal Dempsey of From The Hip Communications to increase its presence on Facebook, Twitter (@CustardStandWV) and other social media channels, along with traditional media outlets. Dempsey will work with Brad Zickafoose of Viziworx Creative Studio to revamp CustardStand.com's content to include customer engagement and rewards strategies.
